Carole Gandy Dixon

Carole Gandy Dixon, known lovingly by many as, “Honey”, passed away peacefully on April 20th, 2023, at home, with her family by her side. She was dignified and poised, sharp and resilient. She was passionately fierce about what she believed in, and adept at ensuring that everything was always in order, done properly, and that no one was lacking anything. She looked forward to all visits with her family, and cherished every phone call from a loved one or a friend.

Carole was born on December 28th, 1931, in Albemarle, North Carolina. She was the second of four daughters, born to Roger and Pansy C. Gandy, and the granddaughter of Reverend Malcolmb R. N. Caldwell, a notable pastor and evangelist in North and South Carolina. Although she lived an exceptionally exciting life, she regarded her most important values and interests as God, her family, and music, and was very modest about her compelling past. Carole graduated in June of 1949, from George Washington High School in Alexandria, Virginia. While there she participated in the Dramatics club, performed with the Madrigal Singers throughout her high school years, and was colloquially known as, “a sweet song-bird”. Following high school, she graduated from Warflynn Beauty College in Washington D.C., and went on to work as a hairdresser for a number of well-known patrons, including Jackie Bouvier - the future wife of John F. Kennedy. In addition to her work as a hairdresser, she studied voice and worked as a singer, traveling to perform at extravagant weddings in New York, at various high-society events in Washington D.C., and even starred in the opera, “Madama Butterfly”.

In 1953, she embarked on what she would consider the greatest adventure of all when she met the love of her life, Roger “Gene” Dixon. They were wed on January 16th, 1954, in Alexandria, Virginia. In May of 1954, they moved to Midland, Texas, where they would go on to begin their family and live for the next twenty years. During this time her focus was on raising her children, Roger and Anita, and instilling the same values that she held, in their lives. She was an active member of Crestview Baptist Church of Midland, where she sang in the choir and played piano. She taught voice and piano lessons, and even volunteered as Secretary of the Choir for Robert E. Lee High School. In 1974, Carole and her family moved to Houston, Texas where she worked as an Executive Assistant for Foley’s. She would later retire from Foley’s, and focus her energy on many more adventures with her husband, grandchildren, and other family and friends.

Carole’s family is grateful for her love of God, family, and music that has been passed down through each generation. Though she will be greatly missed, her family is comforted in knowing that she is at peace, has been reunited with loved ones who have passed before her, and is at home with her Heavenly Father.

Carole was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-three years, Roger "Gene" Dixon, her parents, Roger Gandy, and Pansy Gandy Bodenheimer, and her sister and best friend, Peggy Windsor and husband, Noel.

Carole is survived by: son, Roger Dixon and wife, Tamara, daughter, Anita Skinner and husband, Stan; her grandchildren, Michelle Unger and husband, Samuel, Kevin Dixon and wife, Michelle, Erika Crutcher and husband, Damon, Erin Rivera and husband, Scot, Joshua Dixon, Sara Yuchnewicz and husband, Colton; great-grandchildren, Rebekah, Jacob, Michael, Gabriel and Josiah Unger, Autumn, Seth and Emma Dixon, William and Nicholas Crutcher, Isabel, Katelyn and Emily Rivera, Wyatt and Carson Yuchnewicz; sisters, Marijane Coffey and husband, Ronald, Linda Dickerson and husband, Walter; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and loved ones.

In remembrance of Carole, visitation will be held from 12-1 pm, and services from 1-2 pm on Sunday, April 23rd, at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home, located at 12800 Westheimer Rd., Houston, TX 77077.
