The Binnig Family is a remarkable group of loving and caring people. I was nervous to visit the family home with Jeff one year for Thanksgiving. His Mother, Carole, was so lovely and welcoming. She was an impeccable cook and a great conversationalist. Carole will truly be missed.🌷

Tribute to Carole from her Sister, Penny Riha
	I loved my sister. I also liked and respected her. My sister supported me. She was there for me, and she never judged me. She said what she meant, and she meant what she said, and I liked that about her.
	When we were kids, my brother, Jack, would talk me into watching scary movies with him. He would go right to sleep after the movie was over, but many times I was too scared to fall asleep. I would ask Cookie, as we called her then, to sleep with me. She slept in the top bunk, and I was in the bottom. She never refused my request or ridiculed me for asking. She taught me to tie my shoes. She bought me my first real bathing suit – two of them, actually. And I remember them both.
	When I was 13, I remember she told me I was obnoxious. I had never heard that word before, but, of course, it was very true.
	She taught me how to jitterbug. She needed practice for her school dances, and eventually, so would I. She bought a record player, and brought home her first album, Dinah Washington and Brook Benton. It wasn’t rock and roll. It wasn’t Alex Haley and the Comets who sang Rock Around the Clock, or Shake, Rattle and Roll. It was classy music. She also religiously watched Liberace’s series on TV. But she did watch Bandstand with America’s oldest teenager, Dick Clark. And she was crazy about Elvis. She went to one of his concerts and even rushed the stage.
	After we were both married, we became friends, and our husbands became best friends. They had a lot in common, and so did Carole and me.
	They built a home in Grand River, Ohio. It was one of the most beautiful houses I had ever seen. They filled the house with love, in the form of four children.
	And we had a lot of fun together. We drove to Texas a couple of times, visited Galveston, and the famous Gilley’s from the movie, Urban Cowboy, and even went to Mexico together. We went to a waterpark in New Braunfels. I panicked as Joey jumped off a 60-foot diving board.


Carole had class and dressed well. She shopped at Carlisle’s in Painesville, Ohio, because it sold quality clothes, but she was also frugal. I remember when her children were little, she carried the same purse for thirteen years. And I remember that purse.
	Carole and Dave were hard working people, like our parents. They enjoyed gardening and always had flowers in the yard.
	When Carole and Dave moved to Alaska, we visited them twice. They were both wonderful hosts and we always felt welcome in their home. They were both good cooks and we enjoyed wonderful food. And they came to see us many times in Madison, Ohio and Knoxville, Tennessee. They visited us when we lived on Kauai in Hawaii. We had such a great time. When we moved to Charleston, South Carolina, they visited us twice. All of us enjoyed the history and the culture of the area. We got along. We had fun.
	Family was everything to the Binnig family. After our parents went to a senior citizen’s facility in Madison, Carole came back from Texas for a year to rent an apartment in Madison so she could be close. That was important to her. It was a sacrifice. In fact, if there is one word to describe my sister, it would be sacrifice. 
	I am missing my sister now. She is no longer there at the other end of the phone. She won’t be there to visit and share a cup of coffee. I’ll have to survive without her advice now. But we will always have the memories of all the wonderful times we had together.


Carole is one of my DAR sisters.  I spent time with her in her home while she helped me with my Colonial Dames application.  I will always remember our mother/daughter type conversations as she shared photos and memories.  Whether we were sitting in her comfortable home or in her car in the Kroger parking lot, our coversations were always rich with wisdom that she freely gave. 
 
My last email from her was on Nov. 18th at 9:21 PM.  Even though it was brief, it's an email that I will save in a special place.

Our loss is heaven's gain.

She was a awesome beautiful lady who will be sorely missed by all whose lives she touched, always kind and nice 


Carole and I both served as Regents of Lady Houston Chapter, TXDAR.  We were roommates,  once,  during a state conference.  My most favorite memory of Carole was her generosity of sharing her homegrown grapefruit to members of our chapter during the Christmas season.  We will sincerely miss her at DAR and CDXVIIC and will pray for her family during this sad time.

Carole handed the job of DAR registrar to me after she served so well in that position.  For my years as registrar, I was grateful for her training and guidance.  I will miss my mentor and dear friend.
