Carol Mae Davis Layne of Houston, Texas received her heavenly wings on Sunday, May 28th; just 26 days short of her 89th birthday. She was born on June 23, 1934 in Kansas City, Missouri where she lived until the family moved to Houston.
She graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1952 where she was active in the Art Club, and the Golden Gauchos Drill Team as a feature twirler of baton and lasso.
While in high school Carol became a member of the Corkettes; a championship swimming team for the Shamrock Hotel Cork Club where she performed for their guests as a synchronized swimmer with her state-wide acclaimed team. Later Carol and Dinah Wallace became the Corkettes star duet team placing first in the 1950 Junior Olympics.
She worked as a cashier and accountant for several notable companies - Houston Lighting and Power, Tom Peacock Chevrolet now Mac Haik Chevrolet and was the Controller for Action Box Company. Work did not stop her from being an amazing Mom for her two children.
Carol was preceded in death by her father, John Sylvester Davis, her mother, Madeline Brooks Davis, father-in-law Derrell A. Layne, mother-In-law Mary Elizabeth Layne, sister-in-law Doris Layne McNeme, brother-in law J.V. McNeme, brother-in-law Norman Layne, beloved husband D.A. Layne, sister Betty Davis Sessums, nephew Greg Layne and great-grandson Matthew Goodwin.
She is survived by son James D. Layne and wife Charlene, by daughter Mary Goodwin and husband Dan, by 5 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
Carol was also survived by nephew John Sessums and wife Charlotte, niece Martha Knox and husband Larry, niece Leslie Sessums Witt and husband Bill, niece Teresa Sessums Bollin and husband Calvin, sister-in-law Gail Layne, nephew Tom McNeme, niece Patti McNeme Smith and husband Mark, as well as numerous great nieces and great nephews.
The family would like to give an enormous heartfelt THANK YOU to the HEROS at the Evergreen Cottages-Magnolia in Katy, Texas. They gave Carol extraordinary care with love and dignity that brought her peace and several more years than could be anticipated. As busy as the staff were, they always found the time for fun. She finally found her “Happy Place” and for that we just cannot thank them enough!
Family and friends are invited to attend the Graveside Services for Carol Layne at 2:00 PM, June the 12th at Forest Park-Westheimer located at 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, Texas 77077. After the services friends and family will be welcomed to a celebratory dinner in Carol’s honor at Midway BBQ located at 6025 Highway Blvd., Katy, Texas 77493.
