She so enjoyed celebrating every birthday and holiday as an excuse to send a card or gift. It was not unusual to receive a Halloween card even though you were way past the age to trick or treat. She truly lived the motto that it was better to give than receive.
Carol grew up in Houston and attended Bellaire High as a member of the class of 1958 and attended Baylor before transferring to the University of Houston. She started her career in childcare at La Petite Academy when her youngest started school with the idea she would be home to see three children off to school and be home when school was out. That plan worked for only a short time as rapid advancement in her career consumed more of her time. Finally retiring in 2002 as Senior Vice President with responsibility of over 400 schools west of the Mississippi.
Carol met her husband Olin Hammer on an arranged blind date to her high school graduation that started a three-year courtship resulting in a May 20, 1961, wedding. They recently celebrated 62 years together.
Carol was secure in her Catholic faith as a Catholic Daughter, and along with Olin, was a Eucharistic Minister, and for over 12 years taught marriage preparation, Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, and Baptism classes. She was so delighted in seeing the young couples now with children of their own in church. Described by family as kind, caring, loving, flamboyant, delightful, elegant, joyful, giving, selfless, and empathic. Carol exemplified a true Proverbs 31 woman. Carol was far more precious than jewels and radiated unconditional love to all.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents John and Sacramento Hughens and her brother James Layton Hughens. Left here on earth is her husband, Olin Hammer, and three wonderful children. Kimberly Hammer, Kyle Hammer and wife Erika, and Kenneth Hammer and wife Patty. Eleven grandchildren include Matthew, Alla, Andrew, Lauren, Christopher, Haley, Travis, Ethan, Derek, Sarah, Anna and great-grandchild Olin. Nieces Stacy and Sandy and nephew Scott. She was the ultimate wife, mother, and grandmother by loving, teaching, and devoting her time to each.
A visitation will be held on Monday, July 31st at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home at 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, Texas, 77077, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm
A funeral mass will be held at Guardian Angel Catholic Church located at 5610 Demel Street in Wallis, Texas, Followed by a reception in the parish hall.
