March 19, 1991 – February 28, 2023
Blake Thomas Gregory, 31, of Houston, Texas, left this world far too soon on Tuesday, February 28, 2023. A dedicated and loving husband to Sara Renee Drevecky, he leaves behind his brother, Taylor Gregory, sister-in-law Jessica Brock, parents Anne and Michael Gregory, and in-laws Margie and Steven Witt, as well as a many great family and friends who loved him dearly.
Blake was a true explorer and was known for spur of the moment adventures. An Eagle Scout, he loved all things outdoors – camping, hiking, kayaking, hunting, fishing, and sitting around a campfire. Besides his deep love for his wife, Sara, Blake had a special love for fishing of all kinds. This passion began with childhood summers catch-and-release fishing in ponds around New Territory in Sugar Land and developed into skilled fly fishing, deep sea fishing, and even stress-release fishing in Houston’s bayous. Blake was an expert marksman and hunting for quail, ducks, sandhill cranes, and hogs was another favorite pastime.
Blake lived his life authentically and was not one to change himself to fit the room. He also was not afraid to laugh at himself and was motivated to accomplish great things. Upon receiving a scholarship to attend Texas Tech University, Blake graduated with Honors, was named to the Dean’s List, and earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Management Information Systems (Network Concentration). His internship at Linn Energy launched his career, as he was hired on as Systems Administration Developer. From there he went to work at Cheniere Energy as Business Process Automation Developer and then Solutions Architect with Delinea. He was known for his extreme dedication to details and excellence in performance in his work.
His wife, Sara, was truly the love of his life, and they shared a love of adventure. Blake and Sara were able to persevere through many obstacles and prove the doubters who said a long-distance relationship would never work, traveling 6-1/2 hours each way between San Marcos and Lubbock every two weeks while they were in college. Travels and adventures continued from there, as they drove the New Mexico mountains, relaxed on the beaches in Mexico with his family, and took multiple trips to Colorado where they were married and where they hoped to make their future home.
They planned the wedding of their dreams in Estes Park, CO, and, so typical of them, they wanted an easy to remember date – 12-12-20. Seemingly endless obstacles threatened to cancel the entire thing - unexpected COVID shutdowns, the venue cancelling, wildfires the week prior shutting down the entire town - but Blake made sure it happened. He found a multi-cabin Airbnb for the wedding party and reception. Sara’s dream of a white wedding came true when snow fell on that beautiful outdoor patio of their planned venue, just 5 minutes before she walked down the aisle. Blake even meticulously researched and purchased an off-roading RV to take a long honeymoon trip around Texas.
As his family and friends mourn this loss, we also celebrate his incredible life and the impact he made on those he knew. Nothing can replace the tremendous loss those who knew him are feeling. Although we are separated now, we can keep his memory alive and carry his spirit with us. Blake was a Life Gift donor so a part of him lives on, even touching the lives of people he never met. You can look for him in the warm orange hues as the sun sets over Galveston, walk with him in the mountains of Colorado, feel him in the crystal-clear waters off the Florida Keys, and keep him company where the map turns blue and the shore disappears.
The celebration of his life will be held in Houston at the Memorial Oaks Funeral Home at 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77009. The viewing will be held Thursday, March 9th from 5-8 pm, and the funeral will be at the same location on Friday, March 10th at 2 pm in the 100-acre park in the Texas Liberty Mausoleum Room, with a reception immediately following.
In his memory, have a whiskey neat, tell a fart joke, take a kayak out, or cast a fishing line. If you choose, in lieu of flowers, consider donating to Heroes on the Water, a 501(c)3 organization whose tagline is “Paddle. Fish. Heal” and provides no-cost opportunities for veterans, first responders, and their families to experience the healing properties of being in nature and kayak fishing.
