A pillar of her church community, Billie was renowned for her unwavering faith and commitment to service. Her vibrant involvement earned her the esteemed title of Senior of the Year, an honor that reflected her altruistic spirit and dedication to others. However, her true focus and joy were always centered around her family, to whom she devoted her heart and time unconditionally.
Billie was born in Merit, TX and preceded in death by an array of loved ones: her parents William J. Terry and Sarah Gertrude Busby Tompkins, her stepfather John Haskell Tompkins, her sister Nancy Sue Oldenbuttel, her brother-in-law Richard Oldenbuttel, her beloved husband John Shields, and her cherished son Stephen Shields. Their memories remained a guiding light in her life, inspiring her kindness and strength.
Her legacy continues through her loving family. She is survived by her brother Tommy Tompkins (wife Golda). Her daughters Melinda Miller (husband Wink), Kim Heugel (husband Bill), and Janet Shields (wife of the late Stephen Shields), who have each inherited her grace and resilience. Her grandchildren Allison Butler (husband Charles), Diane Pettigrew (husband Sam), and John Shields (wife Sarah) will remember her as a beacon of wisdom and love. Billie’s great-grandchildren, Madison, Vivienne, and Cash Butler, along with Evangeline Pettigrew, will grow up hearing tales of their great-grandmother's remarkable life and character.
Billie Jean "Gigi" Shields leaves a profound imprint on the hearts of all who knew her. Her life, rich in love and service, stands as a testament to the beauty of a life well-lived. Her spirit will forever be cherished and remembered.
