Bill was born on March 9, 1922 to Barbara (Rogers) Goynes and Dick Goynes in San Augustine, Texas. He and his 6 fellow classmates graduated from Norwood school in 1939. Before the war, he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps in shipyards as a welder.
He proudly served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946 as an Airframe & Engine Mechanic. He served on several air bases in Texas and with the Air Transport Command in the Hawaiian Islands performing maintenance & repair work on C-47 and C-54 air transport craft and B-29 Strategic Bombers and other types of aircraft used during World War II. He received an honorable discharge in 1946.
Some friends introduced him to Dorothy Payne in 1949 and shortly thereafter they were married and raised son, Buddy and daughter Diane. He truly enjoyed family vacations at Garner State Park, a trip to Disneyland in California and a trip to the Bahamas upon Diane’s high school graduation.
Bill supported his family as a Pipefitter with 32 years of faithful service at Diamond Alkali, later Diamond Shamrock and later yet Occidental Chemical. He worked hard and enjoyed his work and his friends.
He loved to fish, collect and repair clocks and antiques and had a special zeal and talent for the game of golf. He actually had 5 Holes-in-One to his credit and had the plaques & trophies to prove it as well as an entire half page write-up in the Houston Chronicle on July 21, 2009.
He was saved, Baptized and later joined Park Place Baptist Church in his mid-thirties. He joined Sagemont Church in 2002 where he especially loved Chuck & Stuart’s bible study classes. About 5 years ago while discussing bible verses with his daughter Diane he reaffirmed his faith and love for his Lord Jesus. He’s not lost! We know right where he is. He is now in Heaven with his Lord!!
Bill thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bill & Dorothy lived in the same house near South Houston for 56 years. He had good neighbors & was a good neighbor to all.
In his mid 90s, Bill moved into Colonial Oaks Assisted living where he exercised, played Bingo and Dominos every day. He died at age 95 the same way he lived.....peacefully.
