Betty Jolene Sander passed away peacefully on June 9, 2024 at the age of ninety-one. As Betty said about her life, she “lived it to the fullest.” Betty was born to Rose and Andrew Nelson on August 4, 1932 in Houston, TX. She went to Stephen F. Austin High School. Upon graduation, she worked in insurance for Bill Vawter for several years and later hired on at Myron F. Steves Co. where she remained for 42 years. Betty would always quote Mr. Steves when he said “Can’t can’t do nothing.” She applied this philosophy not only throughout her career, but in everything she did.
On September 15, 1951, she married the love of her life, Edmond Paul “Bubba” Sander. They enjoyed fifty-two years of happy marriage until his passing in 2003. Some of Betty’s fondest memories were traveling with Bubba. She often mentioned her trips to Hawaii, Las Vegas, and Italy (as she would say “It-Lee”). They also enjoyed going out dancing together especially doing the jitterbug.
Betty was predeceased by her sister Melba Held, her son Paul Scott Sander, and son-in-law Robert “Bobby” Carter, Jr. She leaves behind daughter Cynthia Carter and her husband Gene Frankart, daughter-in-law Theresa Sander, grandchildren Michelle Carter McStravick and husband Michael, Shane Carter and wife Samantha, Lauren Sander Rangel and husband Adrian, and Kinsey Sander, great-grandchildren Tyler McStravick, Robert “Bobby” Carter, Morgan McStravick, Clayton Carter, Elena “Ellie” Carter, Anya Rangel, and Celeste Rangel.
Betty always put her family first and enjoyed spending time with them more than anything. She also dedicated herself to caring for many extended family members and friends. While some may have found her strong-willed at times, everyone knew that Betty had the biggest heart.
We would like to thank MRC The Crossing for the care they have given Betty over these past years.
