Betty Jean was born on September 14, 1940 in Houston, Texas to Robert and Mary “Susie” Philpot. Betty attended Sam Houston High School where she graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1959. While attending Sam Houston High School Betty played and lettered in volleyball and swimming. After graduating high school Betty worked in the accounting department at several of Houston’s major law firms. In 1960, Betty married William Glen “Bill” Patterson with whom she remained married to until his death in 2013. Betty and Bill had two daughters Jennifer and Glenna. Over the years their family grew, and with the addition of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Betty Jean was known forever to all as “Memaw”.
Her family will always remember her as loving and patient but also as the source of their competitive spirit. Betty would remind everyone that on any given day she could outrun or outski anyone in the family. This competitive spirit was always evident on family game night, that she rarely missed. Betty loved to play dominos with her aunts where the games of Moon were fierce. Betty enjoyed traveling with her family and together they visited sites from the east to the west coast. Betty loved Disney World and you will never see a more genuine smile like Betty’s after riding the Tower of Terror or seeing The Main Street Electrical Parade. It was an experience that was so dear to her that she made sure that all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were able to visit Disney World at least once while she was living.
After her family, Betty’s other two passions were cooking and sewing. If you ask anyone in the family what their favorite thing Memaw baked was, it would range from peanut brittle to peanut butter cookies. But all would agree that her “Award Winning” German Chocolate Cake was something we all looked forward to on birthdays and holidays. Memaw was the family seamstress and from simple hems to costumes, the grandchildren all knew who to go to for help. Memaw had the needles, thread and probably some left-over fabric from another project and was ready and willing to get the job done.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband Bill Patterson, her daughter Jennifer Lynne Patterson and her brother Robert Lee Philpot of Houston, Texas.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Glenna and Scott Greer, granddaughters Jamie Candelario, Sarah Davis, Meghan Greer, Katelyn Greer, and Erin Greer, great-grandchildren Jamison Patterson and Isabel Candelario, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at Brookside Cemetery at 2:30 on Friday January 12, 2024 with a visitation from 1:30 to 2:30. Following the service there will be a reception at Spring Creek Forest Clubhouse, 17515 Fairway Oaks Dr. Spring, Tx 77379. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Betty Jean’s life.
