Betty Jene Old, age 90 of Spring, Texas entered into eternal life Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at her home with family after a six-year battle following a debilitating stroke. Betty was raised by a loving Christian mother and was a member of the Church of Christ for many years. Her firm belief in God supported her in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace.
Betty was born April 7, 1933 in Union, Neshoba, Mississippi to Isaac Lewis Reid and Louise Jane Clark. She was the youngest of six children born to Louise that included Emmett Leroy See Sr., Robert Bobby Lee See, Evelyn Louise See, George Earl See, and Richard Ray See. It was the height of the Great Depression and her parents and young siblings had just recently arrived in Mississippi in search of work on a Reid family farm. Having no luck finding work or handouts, the family hopped on a freight train and returned home to Houston, Texas after successfully eluding the railroad “bulls” along the way.
Betty married first, Earl Ray Robbins Sr. June 18, 1948 in Houston just one year after their first date at the newly opened Broadway Theater in May 1947 where they enjoyed the now-classic movie "The Egg and I". She was 15 years old at the time of the marriage. Earl was 21 years old and a Longshoreman at that time. He later became a successful homebuilder. Her second marriage was to John David Old on 12 Apr 1958. John was a veteran of the US Army. His career was with the Houston Fire Department.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by both husbands as well as her siblings Emmitt, Bobby, Evelyn and Earl; and her grandchildren Michael Anthony Shrum Jr. and David Wayne Robbins.
She is survived by her children Earl Ray Robbins Jr., Bruce Wayne Robbins, Melva Darline (Robbins) Shrum, Larry Jay Old, Sr., and Shell Eugene Old; her grandchildren Shane R Robbins, Stacy Michele Robbins, Anthony Ray Robbins, Johnnie Ray Robbins, Jenna Ray Robbins, Melissa Ann Robbins, Sheila Ann Robbins, Kristofer Aaron Shrum, Brittanie Skye Shrum, Ashley Gayle Old, Larry Jay Old Jr., Lacy Eileen Old, Stephanie Elizabeth Old, and Rebecca Ann Old; as well as numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
A visitation for Betty will be held Thursday, June 8, 2023 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 9, 2023 at 10:00 AM in the Family Chapel at Brookside; followed by burial at Brookside Memorial Park where she will be laid to rest.
