Betty Jean Thompson was born on September 27, 1941, in Houston, Texas to the late Bessie Mae Johnson and George Flem. Betty grew up in Fifth Ward, which she loved. She spent lots of time at Julia C. Hester House. She attended Bruce Elementary School and graduated from Phillis Wheatley “Class of 1961”.
Betty was baptized and gave her life to Christ at an early age. Betty married Marshall James Lyons Sr., March 19, 1960, and for 64 years was Betty Jean Lyons. To this union she gave birth to four sons. She worked as a substitute teacher at Nat. Q. Henderson Elementary.
Later in life she worked for Nabisco for 25 years and would say every day for 25 years she quit but never gave up until retirement age. Betty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend. She loved cooking her pork bones, red beans, yams, and cornbread.
Betty was preceded in death by both parents, Brothers (Horace Walters), Leslie Flem, Sister Marilyn Lewis, Son Donald Ray Lyons.
Betty leaves to cherish her memories husband-Marshall James Lyons Sr., Sons-Marshall James Lyons Jr., Michael D. Lyons, Duane Lyons, sister Linda Flem Buttrill (Robert), Grandchildren-Carail Willaims, Marshall James Lyons III (Vonsuella), Bruce A Lyons Sr. (April), Raven Felder, Duane Lyons Jr. (Tabitha), Deshun Felder, Sheay Jackson, and Barbara. Betty’s special friend Mildred Carter.
A host of great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and relatives and friends.
