Betty Jean Covington, 75, passed away on September 28th in Houston, TX. She was born on November 19th, 1938 in Tularosa, NM to Virgil Melvin James and Mary LaVada Newton. She had three brothers and was a loving and devoted daughter and sister.
On December 18th, 1955, she married Howard Bailey Covington, who was then recently honorably discharged from the US Air Force. She graduated from Tularosa High School in 1957 and kept close friendships from those days for all her life.
In 1961 she gave birth to her first son, James (Jim), and in 1963, to her second son, Robert. In 1976, Betty and her family moved to Houston, TX, to a house in Imperial Point, where she managed the subdivision and was on the board. She worked many years as an administrative assistant at Automatic Sprinkler and at Western Geophysical.
Betty was a strong willed person, and always did what she thought was right. The people she loved knew she was always there for them and would do anything for them. She helped those she loved to always do the right thing and to always take better care of themselves.
She loved dogs. Her first dog was named Tippy, and she had many others in childhood. After she was married, she had Needles, Flamer, Jabob, Ringo, Tritan, Watson Cricket, and Shadow. She took in strays and would take care of her loved ones’ dogs when they couldn’t.
Though she did not enjoy cooking, she was an excellent cook, and holidays at her house were always wonderful feasts. She often cooked delicious, traditional New Mexican style food.
Betty kept those she loved close at heart and in the forefront of her life. She loved sharing stories about her loved ones. She always made sure you knew you were loved, and she never forgot those who were gone.
Betty is preceded by her husband, Howard, who passed in 1999, and is survived by her sons, Jim Covington of Charleston, WV, and Robert Covington of Houston, as well as by her two granddaughters, Sarah Covington of Houston, and Rachel Covington of Charleston, WV.
A memorial service will be held, Friday, October 3rd at Forest Park Westheimer at 10am.
She is loved. She is missed.
