Bennie married Charlie Williams at an early age and had 4 children from this union; Charles Edward (Atlanta, GA), Brenda Williams Hunt (Elk Grove, CA), Regenia Williams Jones (Sacramento, CA-deceased 2022) and Leilani Williams (Houston, TX).
Bennie moved to California early in her marriage. She resided in several cities including Honolulu, Hawaii and Vallejo, California. While primarily residing In Vallejo, often Ben would take her children and the other neighborhood children out to Blue Rock Springs park, assist with Girl Scouts fundraising, or other outings and events. After raising her 4 children she moved back to Houston to spend more time with her siblings and extended family. She would lovingly go between California and Texas to help her children with her grandchildren whenever she was needed. Being a young grandmother, she would continue to take her grandchildren on outings but now the outings were places like Alaska, Hawaii, Go Kart riding, or a fast-food run to Taco Bell, KFC, Jack in the Box or Bud’s Burgers.
The family home in which her father resided in Houston was available in the 1980’s. After his death, she began renovating the property where she proudly resided until her death. Her work and renovations made the home a central gathering place for the family.
Bennie loved people and famously would say “I don’t have any friends” because she viewed friends as another part of the family. When Ben wasn’t cooking an amazing pot of gumbo or frying some hot water cornbread she could be found puttering in her yard or chatting it up with EVERYONE who came by the house. Bennie’s door was always open and she would be willing to share whatever she had with whomever. In addition, she enjoyed yard sales (or pretty much any type of shopping for a deal) or traveling. One of her last trips was during her 91st birthday year to Las Vegas. Bennie took huge pleasure and joy in her adult children along with the blessing of having relationships with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bennie shared her love of God and support of her church in any way she could, whenever she could.
Bennie had 10 siblings who preceded her in death: brothers Bura, Nathaniel, Elsworth, Louis (Buddy), Jack, and Henry Powell; and sisters Leola Little, Fredricka (Fred) Sparks, Eliza (Dear) Idlebird and Dorothy Gosey. Daughter Regenia Jones also preceded her in death.
She is survived by brother David Lee Powell (Betty), children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and a host of other loving family and friends.
