Beloved husband, father, brother, grandpa “pipa”, and friend Basilio V. Hernandez Sr. passed away on Monday, November 14, 2022, at the age of 70. He was born to Fidencio “Lencho” and Francisca “Panchita” Hernandez on August 27, 1952, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.
Basilio was a proud man. He would tell anyone who would listen about how proud he was of all his children’s accomplishments, but anyone that knew him, knew he was also an accomplished man. He worked with H.I.S.D for over 32 years as a fire equipment technician. He trained and certified as a C.E.R.T first responder, helping search and recover missing children and people in his neighborhood. He was the mind behind his beloved “It Is What It Is” veteran appreciation flags, but most of all he was proud of his “Old Blue” or “Lokita”. He took pride in keeping her running and showing her off, and eventually passing her on to his children.
Basilio always had a joke to crack and a story to tell. He was the ultimate goofball who loved strong and hard. He captured every little moment he could because he knew the power pictures would hold when time eventually passed. Before camera phones, he walked around and took pictures of absolutely everything. From moments with family to his handyman projects around the house, he understood what it meant to preserve and cherish the little moments. After he got his iPhone, you couldn’t get him to put it down. From taking pictures and videoing everything to scrolling on Facebook until he fell asleep, he wanted to share everything with everyone.
And of course, Basilio was the type of man to make sure he always looked sharp no matter where he was headed. With his signature heavily starched jeans, his heavily hair-sprayed, combed-back hair, and his trimmed sometimes short, sometimes long mustache, he made sure he was always ready to take on the day.
He was the life of any party he went to, showing off his dancing skills just to make people happy. He took any opportunity to dance with his loving wife to their favorite music, which ranged from classic corridos and cumbias to the classic rock and disco of their teenage years. He will always be remembered as the accordion-playing rockstar he was.
Everyone in his life felt his light and his love. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Concepcion Medellin Hernandez and his children Basilio (& Dawn) Hernandez Jr., Lisa F. (& Corey) Harrington, and Rita S. Hernandez. He was also a proud “pipa” to his granddaughters Skylar and Lyla Harrington and Olivia Nava. He will be dearly missed by his brothers and sisters, Fidencio “Willie” (& Mary) Hernandez Jr., Joe (& Dolores) Hernandez, Guadalupe “Lupe” Costello, Beatrice (& Rick) Ornelas, Albert Hernandez, and his twin Hilaria Martinez. He will be joining his mother, father, sisters Yolanda Mottu and Jane Kalie, brother-in-laws Pete Martinez and Valentino Costello, and his nephew Ray Yanez in Heaven.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2022, with visitation starting at 9 a.m. at Funeraria Del Angel located at 5100 North Freeway, Houston, Tx 77022. The service with be from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. The committal service will be at Brookside Memorial Park starting at 1:00 p.m. at 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, Tx 77039.
