Barry Lynn Whitehead passed away on July 31, 2010. Barry was born on New Year’s Day 1947 in Chillicothe, MO. He grew up in San Antonio where he graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1965. He is a member of the Texas A & M class of 1969 with a degree in Architecture and pursued a career in architecture in Houston. Barry was a member of the Texas A&M Singing Cadets and swim team.
He was an accomplished architect, most recently for the Houston Fire Department since 2005 as the department’s architect/project manager. In the 70s-80s, Barry was a senior partner of Golman and Rolfe Architects who designed the George R. Brown Convention Center. He also worked for numerous established firms and contracted architectural design work with various firms and individuals. During his career as an independent architect, he designed hotels, including Marriott Riverwalk Hotel in San Antonio, as well as private homes, office buildings and schools. Recent accomplishments included the Carby Chapel for Luther Hill Ministries in La Grange, Texas; project designer of the recent renovations to the main City of Houston Downtown Library, and the Kyle Field extension/tunnel as well as the Heldenfels Building at Texas A&M.
Barry inherited a love for trains from his grandfather and great grand father Whitehead who both worked for the railroad. He also enjoyed photography, nature and was a very talented artist, winning awards for his sketches and watercolors of various buildings. He also had a collectable store with his wife for a number of years.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 35 years, Carol and his parents Bill and Betty Whitehead of San Antonio. Barry is survived by his brothers Ken (Darla) Whitehead, of Cypress and Mark Whitehead, of Kent, WA; sons Christopher (Stephanie), Nathaniel, Tyler, and daughter Alicia Whitehead all of Houston. He was also a proud step-grandfather of Makayla Christian and grandfather of Haile Whitehead and Katie White. Barry was the grandson of Frank and Neoma (Finch) Whitehead and Ernest and Iris (Welden) Breeden. He was a descendent of several Republic of Texas ancestors, including his great -great grandfather Henry S. Whitehead of Indian Mound Ranch in Liberty Hill, TX.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2010 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Chapel at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX 77077 281-497-2330. A memorial ceremony will be held on Friday, August 6, at 2 p.m. also in the Chapel at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery next to his wife and mother-in-law.
