Barbara Jeanne (Weaver) Thomason passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2023 at the age of 93. She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on February 10, 1930, the daughter of Kenneth Arthur Weaver, Sr. and Mary Josephine (Stone) Weaver, where she attended Arsenal Tech High School, and worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. She met her future husband, John Robert Thomason, who was a customer of Metropolitan Life, and to whom she sent a note wishing him well during his upcoming tour in the United States Navy. Their continued correspondence soon blossomed into romance, and they were married on May 24, 1953. Barbara was a devoted wife and mother, and spent most of her life raising and caring for her family as they made homes in Indianapolis and Evansville, Indiana, Stepney and Monroe, Connecticut, and finally Houston, Texas. She was an avid dancer in her youth, often dancing the night away at the Indiana Roof ballroom to the music of Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and many other great bands. Her other interests included bowling, playing the slot machines at the Alabama-Coushatta Casino, and singing with the Houston Horizon Chorus, an award-winning chapter of Sweet Adelines International. She also loved baseball, and after decades of frustration, was thrilled to finally see her beloved Astros play in five World Series, winning two of them, including the most recent one in 2022.
Barbara is survived by her son, John Robert (Salty) Thomason, Jr. (wife, Barbara), of Spring Branch, Texas, her son, Ronald Keith (Bank) Thomason, of Kingwood, Texas, her daughter, Tracey Leigh Epley, of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, her grandchildren, Jillian Winters (husband, Josh), John Tyler Thomason (wife, Michelle), Jake Epley, Zack Epley, Robin Epley, Sara Thomason, Kimberly Kilby (husband, Richard), and her great-grandchildren, Camden Thomason, Chandler Thomason, Carter Kilby and Cole Kilby. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John, her parents, her sister, Mary Jo Keers, her brothers, Kenneth Arthur Weaver, Jr., Jack Weaver and Robert Weaver, her daughter-in-law, Crista Thomason, and her grandson, Jason Smith.
Barbara was laid to rest along with her husband, John at the Houston National Cemetery on Thursday, May 4, 2023. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2023 in the Chapel at Brookside Funeral Home - Cypress Creek, 9149 Hwy 6 N, Houston, Texas 77095. In lieu of flowers, Barbara requested that donations be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.
