Barbara Kay Weston Scott, age 78, passed away on July 18, 2024, from complications of dementia. Barbara was well-loved and will be greatly missed. Barbara was a kind, loving, and intelligent woman with a good sense of humor. She worked for many years in the Houston custom home building industry, starting at Kickerillo Builders, then at Pace Builders, and last at Thompson Custom Homes. She loved her job as a Project Manager and retired from Thompson Custom Homes in 2018, and promptly adopted Coco Chanel, a stylish rat terrier mix pup, who became her faithful and constant companion.
Barbara was active in her Unitarian Church and generous in helping those around her. She loved dogs, art, aliens, architecture, wild socks, and young children. She enjoyed visiting museums and taking exotic trips to ancient and historic far away places. San Francisco remained her favorite city, one she and Larry visited often to see the sights and catch up with friends who lived there.
Barbara loved to read, especially science fiction. She always had a book nearby that she was finishing up in her spare time. Outer space and alien themes attracted her attention. She adored Yoda, the Star Wars Grand Jedi Philosopher, and all things Star Trek and outer space related. Barbara also loved going to the movies. She often saw one or more new movies a week. Houston offers lots of movie theaters, and Barbara visited most of those that were nearby. She particularly enjoyed foreign films, often with subtitles. She played a wicked hand of Canasta while growing up with her brothers. She loved shopping at Marshall’s and Ross. She volunteered at the MAM Thrift Shop. She was always ready for a road trip with Susan.
Barbara was born in Houston, Texas, on November 4, 1945, to proud parents Betty and James Weston. Barbara graduated from Spring Branch High School (1964) and attended the University of Houston. Barbara was married twice. Her first marriage to Charles Scott resulted in two children, Chuck Jr. and Rebecca. Chuck Sr. and Barbara divorced after a short time, and Barbara remained a single mom until in 1977 she met and married Larry Vitale. Larry was a charming man with two children of his own, Alex and Rachel. They raised their four children together, coaching children’s soccer and cheering on the Houston Aeros Hockey Team. Life was busy, chaotic, and very satisfying. Their happy marriage lasted until Larry passed away in 2001.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Betty and James Weston, her beloved husband Larry Vitale, her daughter Rebecca Hlavinka, and her younger brother, David Paul Weston.
Barbara is survived by her son Chuck Scott Jr.; her sisters Betty Jo McCreary, Susan Eda, and Stephanie Eda; her brother James Weston Jr, (Nina); her son-in-law Jon Hlavinka; her grandchildren Joseph, Bobby, Walter, and Jonah; and many nieces and nephews.
Barbara’s ashes are to be broadcast in the San Francisco Bay under the Golden Gate Bridge, where Larry’s ashes were scattered earlier when he passed in 2001.
