BARBARA LOUISE HOLMES HANSEN, 92 of Houston, Texas passed away Saturday January 25, 2020. She was born April 4, 1927 in Sylvia, Kansas to Harold R Holmes and Lola Verne Brewer Holmes. At 92 years young she fought the gallant fight through life on this earth and is now in The Presence of our King, Jesus Christ. She was able to do many things in her life such as travel to many places around the world and teach in a one room school house. In journalism she interviewed a First Lady of our Nation Pat Nixon and wrote for a newspaper, met many people and had many friends. Barbara graduated from Kansas State University in 1949 with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. She has served her Lord and Savior Jesus, she has served her family, her friends and the various communities she has been privileged to live in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Barbara was married to Ed for 59+ years until his death due to pancreatic cancer in 2008. I believe that if Dad was still alive they would be holding hands, they were both very much in love with each other. Barbara had a stroke in 2000 which was mild. By 2009 tests revealed that she had had many TIA’s or mini strokes. On Jan 5th of this year Mom suffered another mild stroke that affected her ability to swallow, her strokes were due to her AFib heart rhythm. She died peacefully in her sleep with her daughter Susanne by her side at her Skilled Nursing residence at Eagles Trace, Bayou Vista. Barbara was well loved at Bayou Vista in her later years and was known for her sassy attitude, love of eating, being involved, her humor and especially for her sweet tooth love of chocolate. Barbara always liked to be in the center of whatever was happening and was a strong independent woman who knew her mind. Barbara’s family called her ‘Mutti’, which is German for ‘Mom’. Barbara is preceded in death by her husband Edward “Ed” Phillip Hansen, her parents, her brothers Bob Holmes and his wife Martha Holmes and Don Holmes and his wife Florence Holmes. Barbara is survived by her children, Charles Hansen and wife Carolyn Hansen, Tom Hansen and wife Kim Hansen, SusanneSteiger and husband John Steiger, John Hansen and wife ConnieHansen. Grandchildren include Michael Hansen, Karma Hansen Waterman, Joshua Araujo, Seth Steiger, Pam Hansen Harvey and husband Jeremy Harvey, Jeremy Hansen and wife Paige Hansen, Kirsten Hansen Williams and husband Brent Williams, Kyle Hansen, Breanne Steiger Dodgen and husband Kenny Dodgen, Caleb Hansen, Garrett Hansen, Heather Hansen Parker and husband Mitchell Parker, Marcus Hansen, and Hannah Hansen Horohoe and husband Dan Horohoe, Will Haygood and his wife Lisa Haygood. Great Grandchildren include Clayton Araujo, Carter Araujo, Violet Araujo, Dahlia Waterman, Trinity Waterman, Nayla Steiger, Joy Harvey, Nora Harvey, Zane Harvey, Landon Hansen, Lily Hansen, Cameron Williams, Ryder Williams, Tim Dodgen, Jay Dodgen, Kylie Hansen, Carson Hansen, Hadley Parker, Henry Parker and another Parker due this summer, and William Haygood. Also Maternal nieces and nephews “ Jane “Janie” Holmes and husband Ralph Godwin, Paul Holmes and wife Connie Holmes, Scott Holmes and wife Jolene Holmes, Cheryl Arbogast and husband GregArbogast, Joanne Kolb and her husband Dave Kolb. Other Nieces and nephews are numerous and live all over America. Dear in-law brothers and sisters include Ruth Hansen Rodewald and husband Al Rodewald, Hans Hansen and wife Greta Hansen, BJ “Betty” Hansen Shoemaker and husband Erman, and wife of Bill Hansen - Margaret Hansen and those preceding are Bud Hansen and wife Clara Hansen, Maralee Hansen Schroeder and husband Rev Al Schroeder, Walt Hansen and wife Evelyn Hansen, Gert Hansen Swindler and husband Calvin Swindler, Bill Hansen, Helen Hansen Hall and husband Russell Hall.
During Barbara’s life she enjoyed playing Bridge, duplicate bridge, golf, games, family reunions, painting, admiring bluebonnets, investment club, gardening, traveling, reading the newspaper, getting her hair done every week, gathering with her family, and attending and being involved in the Churches she attended wherever she lived. Two Churches included are Bethany Lutheran Church in Overland Park, Kansas and St John’s Lutheran Church in Pryor,Oklahoma. She was a member at St Andrew Lutheran Church in Houston Texas for over 50 years of her life. She was an active member of Church ladies guilds, Memorial Women’s Club including serving on its board in various positions. Barbara loved life, her family and most of all her Jesus.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday January 31, 2020 at Dignity Memorial Oaks Funeral in Houston, Texas. Funeral Services will be on February 1, 2020 at 1:00 pm at St Andrews Lutheran Church 1353 Witte Rd Houston, Texas 77055 with a reception and interment to follow.
