On July 13, 2017, Mrs. Ba (Yeu, Kieu) Thi Nguyen, passed away at the age of 91 years in the comfort of her Houston home surrounded by loved ones. Mrs. Nguyen was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all who knew her.
She was born August 7, 1925 in Ha Tinh, Vietnam. Her parents were Ông Nguyễn Tuân and Bà Nguyễn Thị Sáu. Her many siblings (some alive and some deceased) are Chị Nguyễn Thị Huấn, Anh Nguyễn Vinh, Chị Nguyễn Thị Hai, Chị Nguyễn Thị Toàn, Anh Tu Sĩ Nguyễn Văn Dung, Em Nguyễn Thị Chuộng, Em Nguyễn Thị Chính, and Em Nguyễn Văn Thịnh.
She had an arranged marriage at age 17 to her first husband and had one daughter before becoming a widow. For a time after, Mrs. Nguyen met her late husband, Mr. Hien Vo, got married and had 4 more children. They lived in Nha Trang until the Vietnam War escalated and made plans to use whatever gold they had saved to buy passage on a boat to freedom. Mrs. Nguyen and her family escaped the turmoil of the Vietnam War, went to live in the Philippines with her family until 1978, made it to the United States in 1979, and finally settled in Houston, TX. She graced others with her quiet fortitude, side smirks on occasion, and fed her close family and friends her famous garden-grown fermented pickled eggplants together with little bowls of white rice. She loved the color purple, purses, and wearing pearls with her cultural Vietnamese ao dai to church.
Mrs. Nguyen is survived by her daughters, Võ Thị Châu, Nguyễn Phương Uyên, Võ Ngọc Sang, and her son Võ Hùng Khánh. Although her oldest son, Võ Cảnh passed away before her, he is also survived by his family. By her children, Mrs. Nguyen was grandmother and great-grandmother to many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mrs. Nguyen’s memorial services will take place at Earthman Hunters Creek Funeral Home, located at 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77024. Visitors are welcome to come 3pm – 9pm for both Thursday (July 20, 2017) and Friday (July 21, 2017). Each evening will have prayer sessions starting at 6:30pm. For Thursday only, there is a special mourning mass ceremony at 7pm. On Saturday, July 22, 2017, there will be mass at 10am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, located at 3617 Milam St., Houston, TX 77002. After the mass, Mrs. Nguyen will be laid to rest next to her late husband, at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery, located at 13102 North Freeway, Houston, TX 77060.
