A celebration of the life of Audrey J. Smith
Audrey was born in Detroit, Michigan to John Milton Wenzel and Ethel Elisabeth Kruger (Scheifle) Wenzel.
She is predeceased by her late husband, Clarence R. Smith (CR) and her sisters Eleanor Christine (Wenzel) Bowdy, Virginia Barbara (Wenzel) Wagner and Joan Ethel (Wenzel) McKeon and Suzi Smith, her daughter-in-law.
She is survived by her two sons, Thomas R. Smith of Spicewood, Texas, Chris R. Smith of Spring, Texas and her daughter, Joan R. Smith, of Houston, Texas and her daughter-in-law, Ellen Smith of Spicewood, Texas; and son-in-law, Roger L. Schrenk, of Houston, Texas.
She has three beloved granddaughters, Sandra L. Schrenk of Houston, Texas; Amber Smith Callinan of North Carolina and Lindsey Smith of Cedar Park, Texas. She cherished her children and grandchildren and her favorite pet, Daisy May Smith, a small Maltese. Audrey enjoyed reading, scrabble, crossword puzzles and sewing.
She met her husband C.R. at Northwest Airlines while working as a ticket attendant in Detroit, Michigan. She obtained her bachelors degree at Albion College in Michigan where she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority and her masters in English Literature at University of Houston Clear Lake. She went to St. Mary’s in San Antonio to get her teaching certificate. She taught English in the Northside School District in San Antonio as well as Deer Park and Elkhart School Districts. Audrey lived in Michigan, Oklahoma and Texas. The last several years were in the beautiful Hill Country in Fredericksburg, Texas. Her favorite place to take friends and relatives was the Fredericksburg Pie Company where she truly believed that Pie Fixes Everything. She was recently a member of Bethany Lutheran in Fredericksburg, TX and also St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas as well as Christ United Methodist for many years when living in Sugar Land, Texas. Audrey volunteered many hours at Methodist Hospital in Sugar Land, Texas as well as for the ESL (English as a Second Language) program to teach people English. She also won the City of Sugar Land award for keeping certain street areas in spotless condition. In addition, she made over 50 quilts for children that were getting cancer treatment. Each quilt was made with care and ultimate perfection with the child’s name placed on the blanket and was a small size to fit the child. Audrey especially liked animals and used to ride horses. She loved to push Daisy her Maltese around in a pink stroller. She would like any donations in lieu of flowers to be sent to the non-profit organization called “Friends for Life”.
