A proud native Texan with a family presence dating back to the Texas Revolution, she was born in1922 to Mitchell and Ada Griffith in the small community of Amelia now part of Beaumont, Texas. She was reared in Houston and the Houston area.
As a member of our greatest generation, during WWII she worked at Ellington Field as the secretary for the sheet metal shop where war damaged aircraft were salvaged and repaired. Her father worked in that same shop. After the end of the war, she worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce until she met and married William D. Roberts in 1946.
She was an actively involved and devoted mother to their two children through scouting, baseball, swim team, church and Sunday School. She also deeply loved the children she gained through her children's marriages, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by daughter Suzanne Roberts West (Gayle I. West); son James D. Roberts ( Magdalena Roberts); grandchildren Bryan W. West (Nancy), Miranda Roberts Nelson (Eric), Leslie West Elliott (Jeff) and Gregory D. Roberts. Also surviving her are great-grandsons Jacob West and Everett Nelson.
She was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband and brother, Kenneth M. Griffith, great-granddaughter Avery Nelson, lifelong best friend of 91 years, Jessie Green and beloved tuxedo kitty, Sam.
She was lifelong Methodist and active in the United Methodist Women at Reid Memorial Methodist Church where she was a member for 40 plus years. She was a member at Grace UMC at the time of her death.
She served many years on the board of directors of the homeowners association for the condominium community where she lived for 40 years.
She was an avid genealogy researcher and happily shared her research findings with anyone in the extended family that inquired.
Reading and crossword puzzles were hobbies she enjoyed immensely; so much so that she was one of the daring who worked crosswords in ink and seldom had an error to correct.
Throughout her days, Audrey gave her family the example of a strong, loving, charitable, open minded, intelligent woman who cared deeply about her husband, family and community.
A visitation will be held at Pat H. Foley Funeral Home on W. 34th on Sunday, December 23 from 3 to 5 p.m.
