Arlene Hall Work went to be with her Lord on August 28, 2015 in Katy, Texas. She was preceded in death by her oldest son, Robert Clifton Work in 1997 and her sister, Bobbie Hall Ward, in 2015. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Jim or to her “Gem” Work who, after Jesus Christ, was the love of her life. Other survivors include their son James Timothy Work of Katy, Texas and his four children, Meredyth Richter and her husband Ryan and daughters Mackenzie, and Madison of Pleasanton, Texas, sons Adam and his wife Valarie and children Kyra, Neela, Adelyn and Emrick of Richmond, Texas, Nathan and his wife Christine of Cypress, TX and Spencer Work of Fort Worth, TX., daughter Garnett Payne and husband Charlie and daughter Morgan of Frisco, Colorado and daughter-in-law Sandra of Chandler, Arizona and daughters Lisa Arlene of New York City, New York and Crystal of Los Angeles, California.
Arlene was born on December 1, 1926 in Durham, NC. She grew up, attended school in Roxboro, NC and graduated from Roxboro High School. She graduated with an Associate Degree from Averett College in Danville, VA and with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Teacher’s Certificate from Meredith College in Raleigh, NC. She taught school in Winston Salem, Caswell County, and High Point, NC where she met James Work. Jim and Arlene were married in Roxboro on March 31, 1951 and went to Wilmington, NC to live. They lived in a number of places as Jim’s engineering career took the family to Burlington, NC, Lynchburg, VA, Idaho Falls, ID, Greensboro, NC, Costa Mesa, CA, again to Greensboro, NC and finally to Houston/Katy, TX in 1976. Arlene taught school in several of these places and was active in her churches and the Christian Women’s Clubs. One of her great joys was helping children with their school work (tutoring). Another was her role as Bible study leader in church groups. Another great joy was in the raising of her children. She had many friends and enjoyed entertaining them in her home. She had the gift of listening to others and encouraging them. She also enjoyed traveling and taking photographs of beautiful places.
A memorial service at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Drive, Houston at 2 pm on Friday, September 4, with Rick Myers officiating will be followed by a graveside service at Memorial Oaks. In lieu of flowers, Arlene requested Memorial gifts to Barium Springs Home for Children, in Statesville, NC or Presbyterian Home for Children in Austin, TX.
