He was born on August 11, 1930 in Chinandega, Nicaragua. The eldest son of Angela Moreira. At an early age, Alvaro excelled at many sports. He was an all-star baseball player for the city of Chinandega. He had the honor for playing soccer for the Nicaraguan National Soccer team. He often said he was grateful for the athletic opportunities because it put much needed money in his pocket.
Through his extraordinary mind and academic efforts Alvaro earned entry into the Nicaragua Medical School. After completing his degree and becoming Dr Alvaro Francisco Moreira, MD., he was invited to the United States to do his residency and internship in medicine. Establishing a private practice in the Chicago area he quickly began his family with his beautiful wife Edith Moreira Pallais.
Opportunities and an extreme dislike of the cold, sent the Moreira Family to Houston, Texas, where he practiced psychiatry at the VA Hospital and was a professor at Baylor College of Medicine.
After creating a magical life for his wife and children, they moved to Waco, Texas. There they lived on a 20-acre Arabian horse ranch until he retired in 1999.
The first years of his retirement were blissful as he and his wife of 40+ years purchased a beach house, traveled the globe, and visited family and friends. His lovely wife Edith passed too soon and he never recovered from the loss of the love of his life.
He lived the next 13 years surrounded by his daughters and sons, grandchildren and other loved ones.
He is preceded in death by: His mother and father. His wife, Edith Moreira. He leaves behind his loving and devoted daughters, Angela Moreira Harris (Mark); Amy Moreira Finger (Michael); and loving sons, Alvaro F. Moreira, Jr (Gretchen) and Allen G. Moreira (Rosa Maria)
As well as 13 grandchildren. Siblings: Violeta Moreira Medina, Eddy Moreira, Roger Moreira, numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. He leaves behind a host of friends and neighbors.
Alvaro is remembered by those who knew and loved him as intelligent, witty, and the life of the party. He was kind and generous and a friend to all. He could make you laugh and had a generous heart. Over the course of his life he helped many people in need without expectation of accolades or rewards.
