Allen Haber Kline, M.D. died on June 29, 2021 at the age of 90. He was born in Houston on May 2, 1931, educated in the Houston Public School System and became an Eagle Scout. While in high school, he was a member of the National Honor Society and the National Athletic Honor Society. Allen lettered in four sports and was city boys’ tennis champion in 1946. He entered the University of Texas, Austin as a Zoology major. He was a member of Alpha Phi Omega Service fraternity, Rush Literary Society, and Silver Spurs. He played varsity baseball and was a member of the 1950 College World Series Champions.
Allen entered Baylor College of Medicine in 1951 where he became a member of the Osler Society. After graduation, he completed his pediatric residency at John Hopkins Hospital because of his love of children which developed in medical school.
He proudly served two years at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Jacksonville, Florida. After his military service, he became Chief Resident at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas. He then entered private practice that continued for sixty years.
Allen met the love of his life, Maude Rose Brown, on a blind date Christmas Eve, 1952 and they decided to get married New Years’ Eve 1952! She was his ideal woman-a two year Corolla Beauty at the University of Alabama-smart and athletic. A year later, their family grew as Allen Jr. appeared, followed by Glenn two and a half years later. They were involved with the boys’ schooling, sports, and scouting – both became Eagle Scouts.
Later in life, Maude Rose and Allen traveled extensively, usually with grandchildren. He also was an avid tennis player and fitness aficionado as he went to the gym at 5:00 a.m. daily!
Allen was board certified in pediatrics, was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Ambulatory Pediatric Associates, Texas Pediatric Society, Texas Medical Association, and the Harris County Medical Society.
He is survived by Maude Rose, his wife of 68 years; sons Allen Jr., an attorney and his wife Babs; Glenn, an allergist and his wife Lisa; granddaughters Allison and Elizabeth; grandsons Kevin and Trey and a great granddaughter Margot. His sister Dodie Gaber and his brother Steve Kline also survive him.
He was predeceased in death by his parents Adrienne and Harry Kline.
