Allan was born on the 30th of September 1953, to Stella and Allan Edwin Kean, Sr.. in East St Louis, Illinois. Allan married Martha Ann Smith, from Spartanburg, South Carolina, on the 9th of June 1989, in Denton, Texas. Allan graduated from high school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and earned his degree in Geological Engineering at Ole Miss and a master’s degree in Geophysics from Georgia Tech. He played football, basketball and baseball in junior high and high school, and was an accomplished swimmer and tennis player as well.
Allan had a long and distinguished career as a geophysicist working domestically and internationally for Amoco, Mobil Oil and Repsol in over ten countries including Nigeria, Brazil and French Guiana. He also started his own consulting firm, Sandstone Resources and was an active member of several geological societies in Houston where he gladly donated his time and expertise to others.
Allan was an avid golfer and was a member of Galveston Country Club. He loved attending the Masters golf tournament and told everyone he knew about his hole in one at the Craighead Links in Scotland! Allan enjoyed serving his neighbors as the President of the Shady Lane Home Owners Association. One of the most special moments in his life was being baptized in the River Jordan during a church retreat to Israel.
Allan is predeceased by his mother, Stella Anita Sale Kean, father, Allan Edwin Kean, Sr. and sister, Karen Kay Kean Rice.
He is survived by his loving wife, Martha Kean, his sisters, Donna Lee Kean Young of Dublin, Ohio, and Sandra Lynn Kean Hlipala of Washington, Pennsylvania; his son, Aaron Kyle Kean and his wife, Summer Swearingen Kean; and granddaughter, Violet Joyce Kean in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He is also survived by three stepchildren, John Dennis O’Connell Jr. and his wife, Stefanie Shaw O'Connell of Mansfield, Texas, Jeffery Scott O’Connell of Round Rock, Texas and William Thomas Atkins Jr and wife Tiana Alexandra Atkins of Flower Mound, Texas; as well as eight step-grandchildren, Arden Grace O’Connell, Dylan Shaw O’Connell, Ryan Alexis O’Connell, Mercer Daniel O’Connell, Reid Victoria O’Connell, Grayson Scott O’Connell, Harper Alexandra Atkins and Hudson William Atkins.
A memorial service is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 13th of July, in the Hankmaker Chapel of Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway Drive in Houston, where the Rev. Brad Goad, Pastor, will officiate.
Immediately following, all are invited to gather with family and share remembrances of Allan during a reception to be held in the Deacon’s Parlor.
The family will gather for a private interment at Hillcrest Mausoleum and Memorial Park in Dallas on the 15th of July.
