Alice Ruth Winn Hodge was born in Edgewood, Texas to John Barney Winn and Alice Virginia Dollahite on December 6, 1929. As an only child, Alice enjoyed growing up with many aunts, uncles, and cousins as her mother was the youngest of 11 children. Her childhood years during the Depression were spent helping mom and dad with the grocery business and learning about saving, simplicity, and kindness. She became a Christian at First Baptist Edgewood which laid the foundation for her strong belief to follow the Lord in faithful service. She graduated from Edgewood High School and upon encouragement from her parents went to Dallas to Secretarial School.
Opportunity came for Alice as she landed a job with Magnolia Petroleum Company in 1950 in Dallas. After a trip to Alabama to see cousins, she was told about a young man named H. Wayne Hodge, who was in the Air Force stationed in Love Field. The day in 1952 “that changed the rest of their lives” was spent driving around SMU, where they decided to write each other as Wayne was heading out for B-29 School in Illinois.
Upon return, the couple was married in October 1954 in Edgewood. They were stationed in California and Texas until Air Force Staff Sergeant Wayne was honorably discharged and enrolled at SMU to begin studying mechanical engineering. After Wayne’s graduation, Alice and Wayne moved to Shreveport, Louisiana in 1958. They joined Broadmoor Baptist Church where Alice started working with the children’s ministry as she became a happy mother to two boys.
In 1972, the family moved to Houston, Texas. The move was an opportunity for Alice to continue to serve as they joined Tallowood Baptist Church. Alice would spend the next 40 years actively working several roles in children’s ministry and international mission opportunities. She would love to “fill the truck” to deliver materials for Houston area mission centers and deliver and serve catered meals to Houston area college ministry luncheons. She was a good steward of her resources and her time.
After her husband’s retirement, Alice immensely enjoyed traveling with Wayne - touring Alaska, Hawaii, China, Australia, and countries across Europe. She loved planning details for trips with him! Family was important to Alice. She looked forward to family reunions, recounting family history, and treasured special relationships with her “Tallowood family” until the end of her life on July 19, 2022.
Her family honors Alice’s legacy, including her husband H. Wayne Hodge, with whom she celebrated 67 years of marriage; her two sons, John Warren Hodge of Houston, Texas and his wife Gretchen; James Robert Hodge of Houston, Texas and his wife Anne; her five grandchildren, Andrew Warren Hodge (Sarah), Paul Stewart Hodge (Lizzy), Hunter Wayne Hodge, Hannah Marie Hodge, and Hope Elizabeth Hodge; her four great grandchildren, Brett Hodge, Charlotte Hodge, Kinsley Hodge, and Grant Hodge.
Her family also gives special thanks to her caregivers--Nelvie, Daisy, Nadia, Enita, Beatrix, Beatriz, Landa, and Kala for their loving attention and care.
