Alice Ann Marshall Harris was born in Coleman, Texas, on May 28, 1943. She died February 21, 2022 in Houston, Texas, at the age of 78 years. Alice was a proud graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and an English minor. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
In the summer of 1965, Alice worked for the White House Committee on Education under President Lyndon B. Johnson in Washington, D.C. She came back to Austin and taught middle school mathematics. Alice married Thomas Osa Harris in June 1966. Their first child was Alicia Ann. The family moved to Houston shortly thereafter to support Osa’s beginning law practice.
Alice taught pre-school at Memorial Drive Methodist Church and celebrated the birth of their second child, Elizabeth Jean. She became a full-time stay-at-home mom who always said YES when the need was great. She served as the Joint PTA President of Shadow Oaks Elementary School, the Joint Vice President for the neighborhood pool, the Director/Scheduler and Team Manager for the Shadow Oaks Recreation Association soccer club, and an officer in Belles and Beaus Square Dance Club. Alice was the team mom and chief artist for the Spring Woods Senior High soccer team (crafting the wooden soccer ball signs celebrating each player) and was the business manager and paralegal for Osa’s law practice for many years.
Alice was the Girl Scout leader for both girls’ troops and served her neighborhood and Council in a variety of ways. As a youth in Girl Scouts, Alice obtained the highest award a girl can earn, the First Class Award (now called the Girl Scout Gold Award). It was a source of great pride to her that she earned it and also assisted both her daughters to complete their Gold Awards.
She gave everything to the people she loved.
She is preceded in death by her mother Mildred Elizabeth Grimes Flinn Marshall Hill, her father James Clyde Marshall, and her brother Luther Flinn. She is survived by her husband Thomas Osa Harris, her daughter Alicia Ann Harris Howard, her son-in-law Michael Francis Howard and two grandchildren Elli Renee and Jamie Leigh; her daughter Elizabeth Jean Harris Singhurst, her son-in-law Jason Ray Singhurst and two granddaughters Ava Jean and Ruby Alice.
