After getting married he enlisted with the US ARMY and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and all of them laughing until their bellies ached. He had a passion for travel. He loved a great road trip across the United States. The drive from Texas to San Diego did not seem to faze him and he managed to do it with minimal stops. He loved driving to the west coast to visit his family in California and Washington. He also loved visiting his beloved birthplace of Monterrey, Mexico to visit his family.
Besides his passion for travel, he loved visiting casinos in Louisiana, California and Washington and was very lucky in winning small jackpots. His biggest jackpot winning was being blessed with a great family that loved spending time with him and laughing until the very end.
Alfonso will always be remembered for arriving to his children’s house and sharing a bag of sweet bread from his favorite panaderia and Mambo rice.
He was a man of faith and believed that the Lord was his anchor and Savior, and that faith was also instilled to his children. He would start the day by sending his children a morning blessing and for them to have a great day.
Alfonso had a heart of gold and loved helping those who were less fortunate. He loved giving to his favorite charity of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. On Sunday before his passing, he reminded his children to make sure they mailed in his December donation.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who were fortunate to meet him. He taught his family that you must live your life to the fullest and enjoy every minute of it. He will be remembered as a free spirit, fun to be around and loved to roll with the punches like when he allowed his family to record him dancing on his 70th birthday to the rap song “Big Poppa” from the Notorious B.I.G.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org in memory of Alfonso Lopez Garcia.
