Al Jenkins passed away peacefully at home on Friday, the 23rd of June 2017, in Houston, Texas. He was born and raised in Mayfield Heights, Ohio. He attended Kenyon College, in Gambier, Ohio where he excelled as a pitcher on the baseball team. After graduation, he joined the Navy and served in the Pacific aboard the USS Onslow. As World War II came to a close, he married Arlene Wright and returned to Ohio. Al earned his master’s degree in chemistry at Case Western University and accepted a position with Dupont. After six years, he left Dupont with co-workers, Robert Schweitzer and Warren Kingsbury, and they established Flexicore of Texas in Deer Park. Under their guidance, Flexicore enjoyed many years of steady growth and success. His two partners preceded him in death and Al then retired in the nineties. The business has carried on under the leadership of the second generation of the three families.
Al and Arlene moved to Texas where they and their four children became active members of First Presbyterian Church of Houston. For 64 years Al served faithfully as a member, helping establish the Fellowship Class, and concluding his years of service as Clerk of the Session. He was a scout leader, a church school teacher, and a member of a men’s prayer group. Al was also a long time volunteer at Main Street Ministries and a faithful supporter of their program. His wife, Arlene, preceded him in death in 2001. In 2004 he married June Guthrie Owen, and they enjoyed the remaining years of his life traveling and sharing a wonderfully blended family.
He is survived by his loving wife, June, his children ~ Sandra Jenkins, Karen Jenkins Julian (Bill), Scott Jenkins (Katie), Tom Jenkins (Kay), his stepchildren ~ Randy Owen and Diana Owen Keim (Dave), as well as 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Deaney Albert for her wonderful care during the last several months.
