Ajanta Barua was born in Jorhat, Assam, India in October 3,1954 to Sisir Kumar Borkakoty and Jutika Borkakoty. She is the eldest and only daughter of 4 siblings. Surrounded by a large bustling family that included many aunts, uncles, and cousins, Ajanta was very studious and pursued an interest in History. In 1978, she married Rajen Barua in Jorhat, Assam, an Engineer and later scholar in Buddhism and Philosophy. They moved to Houston, Texas with their two year old daughter in 1980.
Ajanta and her husband forged a well-established life in the United States.They raised two daughters while still keeping their homeland in her heart. While working part-time, Ajanta received her Accounting degree. She went on to work at KCorp Technology Services and later Houston Community College for most of her career. Ajanta loved helping others. Her HCC family says of her: “She was known for her warm, calming presence and a genuine, kind heart to everyone who crossed her path. She exercised diplomacy in working with others and had a passion for mentoring others at Southwest.”
Her passions were for traveling, cooking rare Assamese cuisine, hosting parties, sewing, and spending valuable time with her family. Throughout her life she devoted herself to the enrichment and awareness of Assamese culture, language and literature. She helped her husband edit many of his publications and was an ardent contributor to the Houston Assamese community’s cultural and social endeavors.
Ajanta was the heart of her family and loved them above everything. With her passing she leaves behind her two daughters Anita Ankhee and Renita Raxi, her sons in law Ashish Patel and Sean Harb, her three grandchildren Ciaren, Viaan and Rami.
A memorial service for Ajanta will be held Saturday, October 22, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Fwy, Houston, Texas 77079, followed by a reception at 3:00 PM.
