Adelaide Anderson

Adelaide Farrar Anderson (Addie), 100 years old, passed away on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 2019. She was born to Minnie G. (Batson) and James E. Farrar on Dec. 19, 1918 in Ten Mile, TX, Madison County. She was raised in a strong Christian home and never lost the teaching instilled in her at a very early age. She was asked to skip two grades in elementary school but her mother only let her skip one grade. She graduated second in her class at Normangee High School in 1935. A friend of her family arranged for her to have a job at Sam Houston State Teacher’s College in Huntsville so she could go to college. She started in the fall of 1936 working her way through college as a college librarian and mother’s helper. She graduated with honors in three years, May 1939, taking a degree in Elementary Education. She is a member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society. Upon graduation, she began teaching, 5th grade in Mauriceville, TX. She met her husband, Jack Carroll Anderson, Sr. while teaching and married him on April 4, 1942. They made their home in Houston and raised three children there. She became a full time homemaker, car pool mom, neighborhood friend and church worker par excellence. Her brownies and banana pudding were highly sought after by family and friends alike. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sisters and four brothers and her daughter-in-law, Monette Anderson. She is survived by daughter, Deborah A. Whitfield of Houston, TX, sons, Jack C. Anderson, Jr. (Dinah) of Wilson, NC and David Anderson (Amey) of Kansas City, KS. Grandchildren, Carol Abrams (Stan) of Wilson, NC, Jennifer Whitfield & Wes Whitfield (Lori) of Houston, TX, Charles Anderson (Erin) of Indianapolis, IN, Rebekah Anderson, & Michael Anderson of Liberty, MO., Karen Anderson of Atlanta, GA, & Matthew Anderson (Love) of Chicago, IL. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Caroline & Anna Grace Abrams; Lilianne & Scarlet Whitfield; Jack, Theo, Addie and Eliot Anderson and Sophia Monette Anderson.

We are especially grateful to Melissa and everyone at Tuscany Living Villas in Katy for the excellent care they took of Addie in the last few months of her life. We appreciate everything that you did for her.

She was a member of Bethel Church of Houston. Services will be conducted by her grandson, Dr. Charles Anderson, on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 2 PM at Forest Park Funeral Home. Visitation will be at 1 PM just before the service. In lieu of flowers, please give to the charity of your choice.
