Sue was born June 26, 1944 in Marshall, Texas. She graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1962. She went on to pursue her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where she belonged to the Delta Gamma sorority. She then earned her Master’s Degree in Special Education from Henderson State University.
In her long, eclectic career, Sue was a Special Education teacher in Kansas City, the owner/operator of Duke’s Fabric Center in Hot Springs, a freelance clothing designer and seamstress, the manager of Aileen’s Sportswear in Hot Springs, claims adjuster and human resources director for Geico in Dallas, and finally an instructor and administrator for Thompson Defensive Driving Systems in Little Rock. Everyone she worked with remembers her as a creative, diligent, hard-working, reliable, and empathetic colleague.
Sue is survived in death by her son Scott Daniel Lewis, her brothers Tom Smitherman, Glenn Smitherman, and Ray Smitherman, and sisters in-law Shirley Smitherman, Cherie Smitherman, Barbara Smitherman, and Elena DeWolf. She is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents Francys and Ed Smitherman, husband William Robert Lewis, and son Jonathan Edward Lewis.
Memorial services will be held at Gross Funeral Home on Monday, January 16. There will be time for visitation starting at 9:30 a.m., followed by a remembrance at 11:00 a.m.
