In Loving Memory of Doug “Cuz” Rust
Beloved Son, Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Friend
Douglas “Cuz” Rust, a true original and beloved soul, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Known for his larger-than-life personality, Doug lived life wide open — with the wind in his hair, a Corona in hand, and his heart always full of love for family, friends, and the great outdoors.
A proud Vietnam Veteran, Doug served two honorable tours, carrying with him a deep sense of duty, brotherhood, and patriotism that shaped the man he was. After his service, he built a life defined by hard work and adventure — from the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico as an offshore commercial fisherman to shaping the landscapes of Arkansas, Missouri, Florida, and Texas through golf course construction, including in his home base of Hot Springs Village.
Doug never met a deer stand he didn’t like, a fishing spot he wouldn’t try, or a motorcycle ride he could turn down. His love for the outdoors was only matched by the joy he found in sharing a barbecue with friends, telling stories, and laughing loud. He had a natural way of turning strangers into family — many of whom he simply called “brother.”
He was preceded in death by his cousin Bill, Aunt Betty Joe, Uncle Jimmy, and two cherished sisters, Brenda West and Carol Lynn Ham, along with many of those “brothers” who’ve gone before him.
Left to carry on his legacy are his loving wife, Shannon Rust, and his children: Grace Pittman, Shawna French and her husband Cameron French, Sierra Rust, and Austin Rust and his wife Katie. His spirit lives on through his grandchildren — Madison Foster, Hayden Graves, and Karaline Rust — and his beloved mother Carol Miller Miller. Doug also leaves behind his niece Misty and her husband Jonny Solis, and a host of extended family and friends who will forever feel the impact of his kindness, humor, and strength.
Doug “Cuz” Rust’s life was one well lived — loud, free, and full of heart. May he forever ride in peace, hair blowing in the wind on his “scooter,” keeping a watchful eye over those he loved most.
To celebrate the life of Cuz, lift a cold Corona high and enjoy it with family and friends. Share a story about him and laugh out loud with one another. Cheers! To a life well lived!
