Marjorie was born on July 11, 1942 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. She married Rev. John K. Sorensen on December 14, 1975 in San Diego, California.
Marjorie brought love, joy and beauty to everyone she knew and everything she touched. She was the consummate hostess. Not only did she love to entertain her family and friends, she also organized yearly family reunions at locations such as Estes Park in Colorado and St. Thomas in the Caribbean where memories were created to last a lifetime. The grandchildren loved ‘Gran’s Goofy Gifts’.
Marjorie had a passion for travel and enjoyed touring and cruising much of the world with her husband. Their travels spanned the globe from the Arctic to New Zealand, from Denmark to Egypt and the Holy Land. She had a passion for good food and fine wine and developed lifelong friends while attending a cooking school in Italy.
Marjorie always wanted the best for others, and was always there when family needed her. She also served on the Auxiliary Board of the San Diego County Mental Health Hospital and as a trained Hospice Volunteer. Marjorie loved reading and it was hard to beat her at a card game.
Marjorie worked 22 years in banking at Home Federal Bank, San Diego. She was in Marketing and Product Development and was on the team that developed and introduced one of the first ATMs in California; was charged with creating and implementing the first automated Bill Paying service and researched, developed and ultimately operated the first high-security vault (“The Treasury”) in California. After leaving the banking business, she started her own business, ‘Better Letters’ providing desktop publishing and all types of marketing, reporting and data maintenance for small businesses.
She is predeceased by her parents, John Raymond and June (Miller) Swetta, her husband, Rev. John K. Sorensen, her step-daughter Jil Anna Kruse and her nephew Ryan Swetta.
Although Marjorie never had children of her own, she was a second mom to John’s children, and a beloved Gran to the grandchildren. She is survived by her brother Randy and his wife, Linda; son John Sorensen and his wife Ali; Janine Labak and her husband, Stan; her grandchildren: John, Jonathan, Andrew, Nishel, Amelia, Nick and 8 great-grandchildren.
Marjorie would often say 'Life is good.' Indeed, Life is good and her family were and will forever remain immeasurably blessed by having Marjorie in their lives. God bless her, ... as her husband would have said, 'real good!'
A memorial service for Marjorie will be held Saturday, November 18, 2023 at 3:00 PM at Southern Pines United Methodist Church, 175 Midland Rd., Southern Pines, NC.
