Tai Sung Hong, 89, said he lived a good, happy life. Always quick with a smile, loved to laugh, but also wise and philosophical. He was a fighter pilot and squadron commander for the Hawaii Air National Guard, logging in 5000 hours in F-102’s, F-4’s and F-15’s, surviving 2 ejections. He would tell stories of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 as an 8-year-old boy in Haleiwa. It became one of his passions to study this historic event and the days leading up to December 7 th. He was also community-
oriented, giving time to establish the Livable Hawaii Kai Hui, a conservation organization whose mission was to work on sustainable development. He also earned an MBA from George Washington University, working as a stockbroker.
He married the love of his life, the former Patricia Kim of Wahiawa. They met during the summer at Hawaiian Airlines he was a pilot, and she as a reservation agent. After her college graduation, they got married and started a family. He is survived by his wife Pat, his sons Derek Hong and Jeff Hong; daughter, Jocelyn Hong; and grandsons Kyle Hong, Christian Hong and Aidan Tai Lowe.
On November 4 th , at 10:30 am – 11:30 am, a Celebration of Life will be held at the Borthwick Mortuary at 1330 Mauna Kea St., Honolulu. Aloha Attire is suggested.
