

He is survived by his wife, Veronika Lombardo, sons, Michael, Alexander, and Johannes, and seven grandchildren, Erika, Nicholas, Anna, Tim, Sean, Daniel, and Ross.
Michael graduated from West Point in 1961 and served 24 years in the US Army reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His service included two different combat tours of Vietnam, with the 25th Infantry Division at Cu Chi in 1966-1967, and as a military adviser in Sadec from 1970-71. While at Cu Chi, Michael was awarded a Bronze Star.
Michael attended the MA and PhD programs in Chinese history and language at Georgetown University and entered the Defense Attache program. In 1980, he was posted to the American Consulate in Hong Kong as an attache and later as DIA's China desk officer.
After retiring from the Army in 1986, Michael started a Chinese translation business with some other retirees in Hong Kong. This business expanded over the years, and an office was set up in Honolulu. From that office, Michael was still working up until a week before he passed.
There will be an Inurnment at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific - Punchbowl on Friday, September 30, 2011 at 3:00 pm.
