Mary Han was an amazing, strong-willed woman who lived to be 90 years old. Her father migrated to Hilo, Hawaii from North Korea. He was a plantation worker and later became a traveling merchant. He sold silk and other fabrics as well as other oriental textile goods. Her mother was a picture bride from Masan, South Korea. Mary was born in Hilo while Hawaii was still a United States territory. Her mother ran a boarding house while her husband continued his dry goods import business.
Mary and her older sister, Marjorie were blessed to have piano lessons, the best American clothing and most of all, schooling.
Mary married Henry Han and had two children, a son who was born one day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Their daughter was born exactly two years later on the same date. Mary worked as a waitress in a variety of restaurants including Waikiki Tavern, Tropics Waikiki and Pier Seven, Ilikai. She was well loved by her customers, even repeat visitors from the mainland.
Mary has two children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
