Dear Aunty Mary Ann,
Learning from my Aunty Mary Ann meant being very disciplined; there was no fooling around. You had to watch, listen and follow. There wasn't a whole lot of in-depth explanation of what you were doing. You were expected to know it. That was  Aunty. she is common thread, the golden thread that ties us together and binds us to this land. For Aunty Mary Ann she is the earth, the essence. She dazzle all with spirit, life phosphorescence. Their exuberance embraces everyone. She energy holds our families together. Every day, she reveal hidden treasures: gold, fire, and core as hard as steel for that is her.

Aloha mai no, aloha aku.  Give love, return love. Kupuna Kanoelani will be missed by na keiki o Blanche Pope Elementary and na kumu. The very essence of her being remains at our school. The knowledge or our ancestors is maintained by our young people. This is the legacy she leaves at our school.

I've taught several of her mo'opuna--JimmyDean, JellyDean, JennaDean and Royal.  Her influence was subtle but evident; in one of her writings about her grandmother, JellyDean said that she was grateful for her grandmother whose love for her was unconditional and that she was her ocean. That is how I would like to remember her---

Kanoelani - Mahalo nui loa for touching our lives with your warm, beautiful smiles, your sweet mele - both woice & ukulele, your wonderful dance - hula and even zoomba!  I fondly remember the last event in which you participated w/ us - our Waimanalo Health Center Wellness Fair last month where you played the ukulele, sang, and zoomba'd w/ the best!  Remember a few years ago when you pulled my husband on the dance floor at our Waimanalo Smiles! Gala at Ko'olau Golf Club?  That was the 1st time he met you and he said he loved your spirit!  I also appreciated you sharing your mana'o so willingly at our Waimanalo Health Center Board meetings and other sessions, e.g. Accountable Healthcare Alliance of Rural Oahu (AHA RO).  I will always cherish the time that we were roommates in Chicago for the NACHC CHI.  Besides talking about the educational sessions and networking opportunities, we did pilates together and shared many meals and stories - I had a wonderful time getting to know you.  It warmed my heart and touched my soul to hear about your life experiences - how you met your husband, where you worked, etc and how much you loved your ohana, esp your mo'opuna.  You mentored all of us w/ your stories and had a shining zest for life!  You gave us all so much.  Like sharing what you had - your onolicious baked goodies, fruit, etc. - you always gave of your Talent, your Time, and your Treasures - the 3Ts (or the 3Ws - Work, Wisdom, Wealth).  At our Board Leadership Conference in San Diego a week and a half ago, w/ much respect and pride in honoring you, our AHA RO members wore the lei that you made for all 25 of us  - the orange ilima yarn lei for Oahu and signifying royalty.  Like the lei, you will always surround us w/ much aloha.  Mahalo nui loa for being in our hearts forever.  A hui hou!

Aunty Mary Ann , I will always remember her beautiful smile, and laugh. Such a BIG kind loveing heart for everyone. I am so proud of all her accomplishments in life and the time she gave to help anyone in need, for that I admire. I will miss her always and she will be in my heart.

Aunty Mary Ann, You were always so much fun at the Kupuna meetings and it was awesome working with you at Ulupo events.  I will miss you very much but your beautiful smile will stay in my heart!! Ka'ohu Cazinha

Aunty Mary Ann was so kind and helpful to me when I first joined The Kaahumanu Society a few years back..I'll remember her as a warm and loving woman who took me under her wing like a daughter..she would always say" eh Mamo..how you?where you been?" Aloha no Aunty, you will be missed dearly!

My Dearest Sweet Aunty Mary Ann,

I will miss you so much.  Where will Waimanalo be without you there?  Somehow Sweet Aunty, things will never be the same.  I am so deeply saddened about your departure to Heaven, my heart cried the day I heard. But yet,though difficult, I wish to rejoice that you went doing something you loved so much-travelling the world!  I loved listening to your travel stories and finding out where your next travel adventure would take you.

Our families have just celebrated our 44th year as next door neighbors and God himself could not have given us a better neighbor-not anywhere in this world-and that's a fact.  Ever since I met you when I was 8 years old, I have ALWAYS LOVED YOU AND I ALWAYS WILL CARRY YOU DEEP IN MY HEART BECAUSE YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN MY FAVORITE CALABASH AUNTY-and I have many-but YOU will always be my MOST FAVORITE!!

After all these years, I remember all the awesome Christmas gifts, all the special Halloween goody bags that you even gave to my children, nieces and nephews when they came along, all the support and cheering you would do for me at school in the absence of my own parents being there?  You were always my biggest fan at school, you came to my graduation, you made me my very first Baby Shower when I was hapai with Like, and you also started my first ever baby book for Like.  We had awesome fun doing Country Store at Nalo's Relay for Life and I could never really tell you the very depth of my LOVE for you Sweet Aunty.

My children are also deeply saddened by your loss, especially Zac who is so far from home right now in Virginia.  I will LOVE YOU FOREVER Aunty Mary Ann and THANK YOU for your special LOVE and ALOHA throughout a lifetime that you have given so much of yourself to all of us here who will never forget all that you have ever meant to us.  Fly high on the wings of the wind and I will join you there some beautiful day.
