John Marschell Bevan
July 13, 1949 - August 13, 2021
John Marschell Bevan, 72, of Bluffdale, Utah passed away on August 13, 2021 at Hanauma Bay in Hawaii while on a dream vacation with his daughter and her family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother.
Son of LaVar Bevan and Verona Lewis, John was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on July 13, 1949. He grew up in Bluffdale, Utah where he created many wonderful memories and cherished friendships. John attended Bingham High School where he was on the school wrestling team and graduated with the class of 1967. He later attended Brigham Young University and graduated in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics. He served in the Army ROTC, earning 2nd lieutenant ranking. During his life he resided in Kentucky, Tennessee, Washington, Georgia, Idaho, and Utah.
John was an active and faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a mission in the Southern States Mission, which included areas in Kentucky and Tennessee from 1968-1970
While attending BYU, John met Maria Esther Gomez and they were married and sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on December 16, 1971. John and Esther always wanted a large family, and were blessed with 8 children. When his eldest was 8 years old, he and his wife returned to Bluffdale, the place he loved, to raise their children.
John was very much a people-person and didn’t just have customers, he had friends who he cleaned for as he ran his carpet cleaning business for 40 years. He loved sharing the gospel and serving the people while he and his wife served in the Salt Lake City Inner-City Spanish language mission from 2009 to 2011. He also loved meeting people from everywhere and giving them tours as he served as a host in the Salt Lake City Conference Center for the Church from 2016-2020.
John was a runner and ran over 10 marathons. He taught his children and many of their cousins how to ski. He loved spending time with his brothers, Don and Myrl, watching and attending sporting events together, hanging out in the mountains, and strengthening family bonds. He enjoyed gardening, cowboy poetry, country music, and rodeos. He loved his road trips to BYU games with one of his sons, working his business with another son, and traveling with his children and grandchildren to many fun destinations as well as spending time with them at home.
He had the most beautiful testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and you could see how much he loved the Savior. When he would tell a story about something important to him he would get emotional and teary eyed, a trait he passed on to many of his children and grandchildren. He would often ask in a fun voice, “Is everybody happy?” with a twinkle in his eyes.
After suffering from a stroke in 2017 his family was grateful to have four more wonderful years of making memories with him. During this time, he retired and was able to strengthen his relationship with his children and grandchildren. John was a kind, sensitive, and humble man.
He has missed his mom, Verona since she died when he was at the tender age of 11. How happy he must be to be reunited in her loving arms again.
John is survived by his wife, Esther, of 50 years, his children: Rachel (Don) Hoffman, Richard (Caren), Dave (Amanda), Stephen (Amanda), Liz (Roy) Horsley, Melinda (Spencer) Parkin, Michael (Kim), and Becky (Derek) Blad; 28 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandson, his siblings: Ron, Loya Anne, Myrl, Don, and Susan. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Camille and Jean.
Funeral services will be held at the meeting house of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 14400 S. Redwood Road, Bluffdale, Utah on Saturday August 21, 2021 at 11a.m. A visitation with the family will be held at the same location from 9:30-10:45a.m.
