HIN CHIU LAU, age 88, of Honolulu, passed away June 29, 2011 in Honolulu. He was born on August 22, 1922 in Buck Toy Village, Leong Doo District, Zhong Shan City, China. He bacame a resident of Hawaii in 1938 and was a United States citizen since birth.
Proficient in Chinese, he received his education in the language at the Normal Teacher College in 1938 and English High School in 1946, Trade and Business courses at Adult Education Programs sponsored by the Department of Education, State of Hawaii, and College of Continuing Education and Community Service, University of Hawaii. In addition, he was a member, past warden and former Sunday school teacher at St. Mary's Episcopal Church.
Hin Chiu was a retired pensioner of the United States Naval Supply Center, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and Real Estate Broker of his own company, Hin Chiu Lau Real Estate Brokerage, Inc.
Active in the Chinese community, Hin Chiu served as President of the Buck Toy Club in 1962. In 1968, he was President of Leong Doo Benevolent Society, served as President of Lung Kung Benevolent Society in 1970 and President of Lau Family Association in 1983. In 1995-1997, he was President of both Chung Shan Association and Chung Wah Chung Kung Hui.
In addition, he was a director of the American Cancer Society Oahu Unit from 1974-1976, and later served as a member of the Chinatown Advisory Committee from 1985-1989 under the late Mayor Frank Fasi.
Hin Chiu was also the Adjutant, American Legion, Department of Hawaii, Kau Tom Post #11 from 1991-1992. In 1995, he served on Mayor Jeremy Harris' Down Town/Chinatown Task Force, and in 2000 he served as the General Chairman of the 3rd World Wide Convention of Chung Shan Association.
From 1999 to 2003 he served as an Advisory Council Member, representing the island of Oahu, for the Community-Based Economic Development (CBED) Program in the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism under Governors Benjamin J. Cayetano and Linda Lingle.
But the service for which he was most proud of was as a veteran of World War II and the United States Army Reserve. Hin Chiu attained the rank of Master Sergeant.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Rachel Fong Lau; daughters, Beverlyn (Brian) Chong, Raelynn (Maynard) Pang and Jerelyn Waialae; grandsons, Brandon Chong, Aaron Pang, Ian Pang, Connor Pang; granddaughters, Elana Chong, Janeen Waialae, Dara Waialae; godson, Benson Chow.
Visitation 8:30-10:30 a.m., Saturday (7/30/2011) at Borthwick Mortuary-Makai Chapel; service 10:30 a.m. with burial to follow at Diamond Head Memorial Park at 12:45 p.m. Casual attire.
