Husband, Father, Grandfather, Friend
Always with a “CAN DO”, “NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE”, “NEVER GIVE UP” ATTITUDE is what
best describe Herman, a survivor. Born in ChaoZhou, QuangDong Province of China; youngest
of a family of 13 older siblings. At the age of 14, Herman was arrested by the communists for
being a son of a village governor and landlord. In order to save his young life, Herman had no
other option but to make a harrowing escape from the communist. His escape had led him to
ShangHai and later, settled in Hong Kong as a 14 year old adult. He scrambled to take work
where ever and who ever would hire him to make a living in a strange land. Not more than a
year after his escape, his mom & dad had passed away.
In his late teens, Herman landed a contract to do piece work for a knitting factory in Hong Kong,
soliciting housewives and their daughters to knit mittens. Sadie, Herman’s wife, was one of the
daughters of the knitting housewives. This eventually enabled Herman to start his own knitting
factory for sweaters, where he had over 50 employees to work on his 50 plus knitting machines.
In 1973, Herman and Sadie made the decision to immigrate their family of 7 to Honolulu,
Hawaii. The Lam family have been fortunate to work for the Kelley Family of Outrigger Hotels.
Herman started his career as a parking attendant and with a can do, nothing is impossible
attitude, Herman worked his way up to becoming one the first Asian managers for Outrigger
Hotels, until his retirement in 2003. During his tenure as a parking manager, Herman helped out
many of immigrants with job opportunities to start their own new chapters.
Herman gave it his best to kick to his 30 plus years of Diabetes with his “Never Give Up”
attitude, his belief he would live as long as God will allow him to be on this earth. Herman
valued hard work, dignity, respect, and God. He had many things to be proud of and his home
was one of his trophies of success. Herman passed peacefully to meet with his Father in
Heaven on May 13, 2020 at his home with his wife beside him. Herman leaves behind a
