in Lahaina, Maui, Grandma Helen, as she was fondly known, had
unbelievable inner strength with an outer glow and aloha that befriended
and welcomed everyone.
Her long life took her from Lahaina, to Hilo, to the strawberry farms in
California, to Heart Mountain Wyoming, where she spent 4 years and
graduated high school in the internment camp during the war. Once freed,
Helen returned to Hilo, where she met and married her husband. In the
1950s, the family moved to Kaneohe, where Helen became a fixture in the
community, working at Lin’s Supermarket, Dote’s Supermarket, Young
Laundry, and finally, establishing her own business, Kaneohe Beauty
Salon, from which she retired at a spry 80 years old. Her tenacity,
kindness, and wide smile will surely be missed.
Helen was preceded in death by Takeshi Fukuda (husband), James and
Kenneth Aratani (brothers), and Dexter Fukuda (son). She is survived by
Clifford Fukuda (son) and Michele Sasaki, Delton Fukuda (son), Scott
“Keshi” Fukuda (grandson), Carlie and Rawlins “Bubba” Fukuda (great-
grandchildren), Clayton and Lynn Fukuda (son and daughter-in-law),
Brandon and Justin Fukuda (grandsons).
