Edmund Hong Tow Loo, 89, of Honolulu, passed into God’s keeping while under hospice care at home on July 1, 2014. He was the son of the late Peter S.H. Loo and Elizabeth K.T. Chun. Edmund attended McKinley High School and was a United States Army veteran who served honorably in the Korean War. He was awarded a Purple Heart and a Korean Service Medal; humbly returned to South Korea at the invitation of the Korean government with his fellow veterans to commemorate the 45th Anniversary of the signing of the treaty and end of the war.
Edmund was a retired United States Post Office employee, who spent many years at the Downtown and Fort Shafter branches. He enjoyed serving the public and meeting many new people from all walks of life. He was a member of the American Legion, Kau Tom Post 11. A former member of the United Church of Christ, he enjoyed singing in the UCC Choir and self-publishing a choir newsletter. He and his wife June were the first couple to be married at the church by Reverend Harold Jow. He later joined and faithfully attended the Apostolic Faith Church (Jesus Coming Soon), where he was baptized and filled, until his stroke in 2007.
Edmund was foremost a family man. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, June Leong Loo, his daughter, Maryanne Loo Wong, son-in law, Thomas and daughter-in-law Michele (Yoshimoto) Loo. He took great pride and joy in his grandson Matthew Wong, and five granddaughters: Stephanie Wong Srun (Roland), Leslie Ann Wong Yanagihara (Greg), Colleen Loo of Las Vegas, Rachel Loo, and Kimberlie Wong. His two great-grandsons, Torin and Theodin Srun, and one great-granddaughter, Lillian Yanagihara, never failed to bring a smile to his face.
He was preceded in death by the premature passing of his son Peter-James K. Loo, just recently losing his dear sister Eleanor Ho Lock and sister-in-laws, Vivian K.C. Leong and Bertha L. Lee.
Visitation: 9 a.m., Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Borthwick Mortuary. Services at 11 a.m. Burial 1 pm at Manoa Chinese Cemetery.
