Master Sgt. Albert (Al) Francis Vierra, USAF, Ret., 88, walked the Hawaiian rainbow to heaven on Saturday, May 2, 2020, in Honolulu, HI. Al was born on July 25, 1931, one of six children, to parents John and Rose Vierra in Honolulu, HI. In 1950, he graduated from McKinley High School where he excelled in football, track, and cartoon caricature drawings. He briefly attended the University of Hawaii and joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Shortly after, Al relocated to the City of Los Angeles where his artistic talents landed him employment as an Associate Architect. In 1960, he married Audrey Fong Vierra of Honolulu and raised their family in Northridge, CA. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in various positions to include Financial Clerk and Scoutmaster. Al earned a bachelor’s degree from California State University Northridge by attending night school. He enjoyed sharing his Hawaiian, Chinese, and Portuguese heritage as one of the founding members and President of the Hui O Hawaii of San Fernando Valley. Al will forever be remembered for delicious Portuguese sausage, Portuguese bean soup, and malasadas. Al retired from public service with the City of Los Angeles (38 years) and the U.S. Air Force Reserve (38 years). In 2010, Al and Audrey returned to Honolulu, HI to enjoy their retirement years with their Vierra and Fong family and friends.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, John and Rose Vierra; and brothers, Donald R. Vierra, Stephen F. Vierra, and John G. Vierra.
He is survived by his spouse, Audrey Fong Vierra; children, Marjorie (Cliff) Gorai, Colleen Vierra, Albert (Laura) Vierra; grandchildren, Phylisha, Alana, Albert Ruben, Talyn, and Creighton Gorai; siblings, Alvin H. Vierra and Josephine V. Satterfield along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
Al will be laid to rest at a private graveside burial at Diamond Head Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends when it is safe for all to reunite again.
A special thanks to the medical professionals and social workers from Queen’s Hospital and The Villas Rehabilitation Center of St. Francis for providing excellent care and successfully bringing him out of several life-threatening situations. To his numerous family and friends who wrote letters, called, prayed, and fasted for him, words cannot express the deep gratitude for those acts of kindness and love.
