George E. Morrow

George Edward Morrow, 86, of Homosassa, Florida and formerly of Brunswick, Maine and Crystal River, Florida, passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2024. A native of Brooklyn, New York, he was born March 15, 1938 to the late William R. Morrow, Sr. and Adeline (Genovese) Morrow.

George attended Brooklyn Technical High School, graduated in 1956, and joined the U.S. Navy as a Seaman (E-3) that same year. He received an appointment to attend the U.S. Naval Academy, where he served in the 17th Company and earned a B.S. degree in Naval Science. He was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy upon graduation in 1961. He later attended the University of Maine at Orono earning a master’s degree from the College of Education in 1973.

George valiantly served in Vietnam as a Navy Lieutenant and RVN Advisor from August 1967 to February 1969. He earned numerous awards, including the Bronze Star with Combat “V”. Dad served on the U.S.S. Kenneth D. Bailey, Springfield, and Harry E. Yarnell. He later retired as a U.S. Navy Captain.

George worked for over 35 years at the Supervisor of Shipbuilding (SUPSHIP) in Bath, Maine (part of the U.S. Department of the Navy at the U.S. Department of Defense) where he was a Ship Superintendent and oversaw all aspects of the ship construction or repair. He worked on various ships and classes, including the Arleigh Burke Class guided missile destroyer. He earned numerous awards, including the Meritorious Civilian Service Award by the U.S. Department of the Navy.

George met his beloved late wife of 36 years, Alice M. Morrow, at SUPSHIP. They were married on June 22, 1984 at Saint Mary’s Church in Bangor, Maine. Her obit can be found at https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/homosassa-fl/alice-morrow-9240385

George was a lifelong, loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Many remember him for always striving for the right thing regardless of it being hard or unpopular, a master of shipbuilding and repair, and having an amazing memory and wonderful sense of humor.

George was a faithful and devoted parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Brunswick, Maine, St. Benedict Catholic Church in Crystal River, Florida, and, over the past few years, St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Homosassa, Florida.

George was a member of the Knights of Columbus Sekenger Council #1947 of Brunswick, ME for 37 years, was a Fourth Degree Honorary Life Member, and attended meetings at the St. Thomas the Apostle Council #15154. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW Life Member), American Legion Unit #155, was extremely patriotic, and always exercised his right to vote.

In addition to his parents and wife Alice, he was preceded in death by his only brother William R. Morrow, Jr. as well as other family on both his and his late wife’s side. Dad is survived by his two children: Paul Morrow of Brooksville, Florida and Jean Morrow of Homosassa, FL; his granddaughter and grandson, Maribelle Morrow and Kirk Duremdes of Grovetown, Georgia; and several nieces and one nephew.

There will be a Rosary at 8:15 AM on Monday, July 29, 2024 at Wilder Funeral Home in Homosassa, FL. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated after at 10:00 A.M. at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 455 S Suncoast Blvd., Crystal River Florida with Rev. Monsignor Joseph "Joe" Sobiesiak, Rev. J. Glenn Diaz (Pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle), and Father Eugene Gancarz, Co-Celebrating. A reception will be held following Mass in the Parish Hall. Burial with full military honors will be at a later date at St. John Vianney Parish Catholic Cemetery in Wallagrass, Maine.
