Dr. Charles Vernon Skoog, Jr., M.D. was born on February 9, 1942, in Birmingham, Alabama to Charles Vernon Skoog, Sr. and Gladys Kacel Skoog. He graduated from Shades Valley High School in 1960 and earned his Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Alabama in 1963.
After graduating from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in the Class of 1967, Vernon served in the United States Army as the Chief Medical Officer at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. A licensed physician in the State of Alabama for 53 years, Dr. Skoog served on the medical staff of Lloyd Noland Hospital before dedicating 35 years of his career to practicing Internal Medicine at Bessemer Carraway/UAB Medical West. Dr. Skoog had a particular enthusiasm for geriatric care; in addition to his office and hospital practices, he also served as medical director for several nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and hospices.
Vernon was a member of Riverchase United Methodist Church and sang in the bass section of the Sanctuary Choir for many years.
He is survived by his former wife of 37 years, Jo Anne Baker Skoog, their son, Brian Vernon Skoog, and his sister, Sharon Mullis.
Friends are cordially invited to the visitation which will take place on Monday, the 19th of June, from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Funeral services for Dr. Skoog will commence at 1:00 p.m. at Ridout's Valley Chapel located at 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, Alabama 35209. Graveside services afterwards will be held privately for the family.
