October 2, 2022.
Tom was born in Birmingham, Ala. in 1938, the eldest child of Thomas Crawford, Sr. and
Catherine Hydinger Crawford. Tom married the love of his life, Julia B. Hagler, also of
Birmingham, in 1959, and they were married for 59 years. The couple shared a passion for travel and golf, often combining the two as they explored many fabulous places. Tom spent much of his last years closely following the players on the PGA Tour, getting excited about the new young golfers trying to make their mark. Tom and Julia also shared a passion for the arts. They were avid collectors and attended many live musical and dramatic performances together.
Tom graduated from Ramsay High School and Vanderbilt University, where he participated in
the Navy ROTC program and Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity while earning a degree in finance.
After graduation, Tom served 2 years in the Navy as a Lieutenant in Charleston, SC. He went on
to be a CPA, working for several different companies throughout his career, most notably Rust
Engineering and Hardin Construction Company. His successful career led the family to
Pittsburgh, Atlanta and San Antonio. Later, Tom went into business for himself as a financial
advisor and enjoyed investing in various real estate ventures. He loved to encourage young
entrepreneurs by sharing his wealth of knowledge about business planning and finance.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Julia, and his brothers, Robert and William
Crawford.
He is survived by his daughters, Molly Ream (Rick), and Meg Brooks (Steve), and his son,
Channing Mason, along with seven beloved grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren whom
he adored. He is also survived by his sister Cathy Rye Gilmore (Vic) and sister-in-law Beth
Schmaltz Crawford, as well as their children and grandchildren.
The family would like to thank all of the wonderful caregivers who have shared their heart with
their dad over the years: Juequise, Rosetta, Fatima, Sylvia, Katie, Ruby, Anne, Adelle, Annette,
Jenni, Calice, and Susan. They would also like to thank the directors and staff at Vickery Rose
Retirement Community, which was a wonderfully caring place for Tom to call home this year.
In keeping with Tom’s lifelong commitment to philanthropy, the family requests that, in lieu of
flowers, you make a donation to your favorite charity in his honor.
A celebration of Tom's wonderful life will be held in Atlanta on Thursday, January 5, 2023 with
a cocktail reception at Glover Park Brewery in Marietta from 5pm-8pm. There will be a service
to celebrate Tom’s life in Birmingham on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 11:30 in the Chapel at
Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood. Lunch and visitation will follow the service.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ridoutsvalleychapel.com for the Crawford family.
