She was a graduate of Howard College (now Samford University), a member of Phi Mu Fraternity and on the Student Council. She was active in Birmingham’s Phi Mu Alumni.
Sarah’s life has been one of inspiration and service, especially in her personal mission of music ministry as an organist, pianist, and vocalist, in numerous churches and organizations.
As a student, she served as organist and accompanist at Woodlawn Baptist Church (now Liberty Park Baptist Church) and later at Southside Baptist Church.
She worked with children in Baptist Training Union at Woodlawn Baptist, and when living in Tuscaloosa, was active in First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa, the Tuscaloosa Music Club and the University of Alabama Women’s Madrigal Group as singer and accompanist.
After moving back to Birmingham, she and her family were members of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church. She accompanied children’s choirs for 20 years, and the Dawsonaires Senior Adult Ministry Choir for 25 years. She played for the Joy Sunday School Class and for Dawson’s Wednesday evening prayer meetings. She was an active member of the Homebound workers at Dawson and visited shut-ins for 35 years. She was also active in Samford Faculty Women’s Club, was a member of Samford Auxiliary (now Legacy) and The Birmingham Music Club Guild. After she and her husband moved to Galleria Woods Retirement Community, she was involved in activities including community and prayer services, and playing for services in the Galleria chapel on Sunday afternoons.
She was a partner in her husband’s businesses, including Reeves Properties, Inc.
She was born in Birmingham, Alabama to parents James Akin Garrett and Lydia Allgood Garrett. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a brother, James Albert Garrett, and two sisters Pollie Garrett Wells and Pauline Garrett Whitehead. She is survived by her beloved husband L. T. (Ron) Reeves, Jr., daughter Renee Reeves Hyde, son Alan Garrett Reeves, three grandchildren, Tim Patmon, Moira Larson, Jon Hyde; a brother Francis Charley Garrett of Spokane, Washington, brother-in-law Julian S.Whitehead of Atlanta, Georgia, cherished nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and great-great nephews.
Sarah was beloved by all who knew her, and her great spirit will be remembered with celebration, and with the same joy that she brought to others.
A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church on March 8th, with visitation at 10:00 a.m., service at 11:00 a.m. Graveside services will be for family only.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Sarah do so with
donations “in the memory of Sarah G. Reeves” to the Dawson Memorial Baptist Church Music Academy, 1114 Oxmoor Rd, Homewood, Al 35209.
