Reverend Russell Callen Luquire, Jr., of Birmingham, passed away on Monday, the 22nd of February 2021. He was 87 years of age. Born on the 8th of November 1933 to Russell Callen Luquire, Sr. and Dora Miller Luquire, he grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and attended Phillips High School and was a graduate of the Birmingham University School (Altamont). He earned his bachelor’s degree from Birmingham Southern College where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He later earned a degree from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. “Brother Russell” as he was known throughout his career served as head minister at many churches in the North Alabama United Methodist Conference as well as the Mississippi United Methodist Conference. Throughout his career in the ministry Reverend Luquire was always involved in working with church youth groups. He promoted multiple church sponsored sports teams and music programs and was always a regular visitor at area hospitals participating in many church outreach programs focused on the elderly members of the community. For several years he worked with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes leading many events involving sports figures and other notables to participate in various programs for the local churches. During his career in the ministry he was also a member of several volunteer fire departments and worked in some local funeral homes, often serving as a Chaplain to families in their time of need.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell Callen Luquire, Sr. and Dora Miller Luquire Marshall; stepfather, Bruce Sterling Marshall; and by his daughter, Lisa Sue Luquire. He is survived by his son, Russell Callen Luquire, III (Keisha); and two granddaughters, Kori Griffin and Taylor Griffin; and by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Friends are cordially invited to Graveside Services being held on Saturday, the 27th of February 2021 commencing at eleven o’clock in the morning. Services will be held at Elmwood Cemetery, located at 600 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, Birmingham, Alabama 35211. The family politely requests that all social distancing guidelines and face masks be required. In lieu of usual remembrances, memorials honoring the life of Reverend Luquire may be directed to the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama located at 107 Walter Davis Drive, Birmingham, Alabama 35209. Services are under the direction of Ridout’s Valley Chapel (205-879-3401) in Homewood.
