Robert Locke Howell Jr.

Robert Locke Howell, Jr., of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on May 21, 2023, at the age of 87. He was born on October 21, 1935, in Haywood County, NC, to Robert Locke, Sr. and Anna Leatherwood Howell. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jerry Howell. He is survived by his sister Margaret Howell Gissendanner (Dan) of Anderson, SC, and by his nieces Anna Marie Hinnant and Julie Howell, his nephews Scott Howell and Dan Gissendanner, and 5 grandnieces and nephews, and longtime friend John Schoen.

Bob attended Morristown High School in Morristown, TN, where he held many offices, among them president of his junior class and student body president. Following graduation in 1954, he entered the United States Army and served in Germany. Upon discharge, he attended East Tennessee State University, graduating in 1960 with a degree in Industrial Arts. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

Following graduation, Bob moved to Birmingham to take a job in the Social Security Payment Center. He then began a long career in banking, first at The First National Bank of Birmingham and later with Colonial Bank.

Bob enjoyed serving in Elks (BPOE), the Big Brother organization, Party of the Month Club Board. He enjoyed dancing, tennis, sailing, and golf as a member of the Woodward Golf Club.

Bob was a member of Vestavia Methodist Church and a loving son, brother, uncle, great-uncle, and friend.

Burial will be arranged later in the family plot in Morristown, TN. Contributions may be made to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood.
